OTD in 2016 Gorbachev stated quite categorically that he never received a promise by NATO not to admit new members to the alliance. He said the idea that Russia was betrayed is a myth. Which triggers my trolls.

FYI, Putin has been ruling Russia since the last century and the last millennium (literally). He should have retired back in 2008, but he has long since exterminated even the slightest competition, was literally handpicked as a successor, never spent a single second building any kind of political career, and even openly rewrote his country's constitution, resetting his presidential term count to zero so he could stay in power for life. And now he is entertaining himself by waging the biggest bloodbath in Europe since Adolf Hitler. Somehow, I don't see any hysterical cries of "it's time for him to go" from all these newly minted incredibly knowledgeable experts on electoral law.

Trump is lying again. Putin started the war and has repeatedly refused to negotiate to end it. The US spent nothing like $350 billion. Half the money is not missing. Washington and Moscow are both significantly more corrupt than Kyiv. Putin, not Zelensky, is a dictator who openly steals elections.
And not a word about Putin, who started this bloody war and is killing Ukrainians. Trump is Putin's friend, as he himself says.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Ukraine and Zelenskyy are far more popular than Russia and Putin across the entire US electorate. Dems should frame Trump's "deal" as treasonous (it is) to voters.

Today, Russia expressed its thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia. As of now, sadly, twelve people have been confirmed killed, including three children. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Another fourteen people have been injured, and two of them are in critical condition โ€“ the doctors are fighting to save their lives. The status of twelve more people who may have been there is still being verified. All emergency services are at the scene, and search-and-rescue operations are underway. Overnight, thirteen of our regions came under attack. Residential buildings, infrastructure, and railway facilities have been damaged. Last night confirmed once again that in Russia, they take any easing of pressure to mean they can keep fighting, to mean they can keep dropping bombs on cities. Different signals are needed. Russia must understand that it needs to stop the war, and for that to happen, Russia must feel its losses. Right now, it is our long-range capabilities that are ensuring this. And we will respond to Russian strikes. I thank everyone who is helping.

So -- we Ukrainians are supposed to just unilaterally halt our successful campaign of strikes against the oil industry of an aggressor power that is waging a war to destroy our country, give it time to rebuild that industry and resume raking in oil money hand over fist to fund its war, simply give up our only real hope and our only means of forcing the aggressor to stop, and just sit there and silently die under Russian bombs falling on our kindergartens and heating plants -- for NOTHING. All because one senile, Putin-obsessed petty tyrant decided to stage yet another stupid election-season clown show for the TV cameras? Yeah, not going to happen.

Zelenskyy is the anti-Trump, a person of courage and principle who has stood in the face of overwhelming odds. Trump will never be him. Trump can only envy and resent the respect that Zelenskyy has earned.
"I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new president," President Trump said Saturday, slamming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for targeting Russian diesel refineries after Trump made a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel. "He can do whatever he wants, but he can't do that because we have a world problem," Trump said. "And the problem is caused by the lack of refineries for diesel fuel... He'd better damn well stop."

โ€œI want Putin to get in front of the ICC." @FranceskAlbs explains to @mehdirhasan what she actually meant when she said there shouldnโ€™t be any more weapons sent to Ukraine, noting that there are people โ€œexploitingโ€ the suffering of Ukrainians.

Incredible: another Ukrainian famine is unfolding, this time in Russian-occupied Oleshky. The remaining inhabitants of what used to be a thriving small city, now down to about 6000 people, are blockaded by Russian forces and cut off from food and water. bbc.com/news/articles/c60qxyโ€ฆ

The Ed Sheeran drama was already an interesting case study in hypocrisy, as Ed gets mercilessly harassed for supporting Ukraine but not Palestine, while Macklemore (or anyone else, really) gets none of it for doing it the other way around. But the double standard becomes even more glaring when compared to Ovechkin. Sheeranโ€™s entire touring lineup walked out over an attempt at neutrality. Meanwhile, Ovechkin actively and openly aligns himself with not just people, but a regime currently waging a brutal war of aggression in Ukraine, killing civilians daily, and starving occupied communities like Oleshky by denying food supplies. Yet Ovechkin continues to play professional team sports without his teammates walking out, fans turning away, or facing anything close to proportional backlash. It exposes a deeply broken standard for who society chooses to hold accountable.

A fresh poll: 77% of Ukrainians living in Ukraine believe the country should continue its armed resistance even if, because of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, some people have to live without electricity, heating, or sewage services for a period of time. Only 12% believe Ukraine should agree to any Russian demands (even accept defeat in the war) to avoid this; 11% are undecided. What is notable is that an absolute majority in every surveyed region supports continuing the fight despite these hardships: 77% in the west, 83% in Kyiv, 79% in the center and north, 76% in the south, 75% in the lower Dnipro region (Zaporizhia?), and 68% in the east. Among those who do not trust Zelenskyy as a leader, 65% also support continuing the fight, while 20% favor accepting all Russian conditions. Among Zelenskyyโ€™s supporters, 89% support continued resistance, and only 5% oppose it. Also noteworthy: 85% of respondents who are servicemembers or veterans support continuing resistance despite attacks on essential infrastructure. The figure is 77% among civilians who have not served in the military.

Remember this when someone says "Nuland" phonecall. You know, the convo where Nuland clearly supports the opposition taking Yanukovych's deal, contrary to the will of the protesters, and leaving Yanukovych in power.
28.02.2014: Konstantin Zatulin speaks with Putinโ€™s adviser Sergey Glazyev. Yanukovych intends to travel to Crimea to address the people there. They agree that this must be prevented: his legitimacy must not be further strengthened, and Yanukovych himself is no longer needed.

When I say being "anti-Zionist" doesn't necessarily make you pro-Palestine or even pro-Arab, this is what I mean. Emma is backing a movement that most of Lebanon wants to see disarmed, that spent decades murdering their Lebanese opponents (including Communists), supported 30 years of Syrian occupation, and helped Assad murder hundreds of thousands of his own people just so he could hold on to power. She's backing them because of their position on the only thing she cares about in the region which is - however fruitlessly - fighting with Israel. She and the "movement" she represents would happily see Lebanon remain an impoverished Iranian launchpad, regardless of the consequences, because a third of the country burning to the ground is worth it Israel gets slightly burnt in the process.
Hezbollah is currently the only viable alternative to a collaborationist, corrupt Lebanese state that is unable to present a military challenge to Israel, by design. "Please bomb us slightly less" is all they can muster as Israel ethnically cleanses the south. This is the game.
