DCC AND THE LORD MAYOR NEED TO CLEAR THIS UP Could Dublin City Council and the Lord Mayor please issue one clear joint statement and tell the people of Dublin exactly what is happening? On Wednesday, Dublin City Council announced that Winter Lights was moving from December to January. On Thursday, Councillor Nial Ring publicly stated that the decision had been reversed following the reaction from the public. Dublin City Council then issued a new Christmas programme confirming that Christmas projections and a number of Winter Lights favourites will take place during December, with further lighting in January. Now today we are being told that there has been no U-turn and the story has not changed. Can anyone blame people for being confused? Councillors, the media and the public are now trying to work out exactly what has and hasn't changed. DCC and the Lord Mayor need to come out together and give one clear answer. 🎄 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS UPDATE 🎄 Fellow Councillor Ring spoke out on the radio last night about the decision to move the lights from December to January. A number of councillors are very disappointed with this change, and it came as a surprise to many of us. But let's also be fair here, this isn't simply the Lord Mayor's decision. Dublin City Council and staff members are also involved in this decision. Let's remember the history of this. In 2018, Dublin City Council itself introduced these lights as a “new Christmas initiative”, designed to illuminate Dublin throughout the month of December. And only last year, in 2025, then Lord Mayor Ray McAdam described them as becoming one of Dublin's “great Christmas traditions” and encouraged people to come into the city and enjoy some “Christmas cheer”. So let's stop pretending these lights suddenly have nothing to do with Christmas. Councillor Ring and Councillor Christy Burke have made a very sensible suggestion. Turn the lights on for Christmas and leave them on right through until the end of the St Brigid's Day celebrations. St Brigid's Day absolutely deserves to be celebrated and highlighted in its own right. Dublin City Council has one of the best events teams in the country, and I'm sure they can come up with something different and special for St Brigid's Day as well. And I'll make my own position very clear. I don't call them Winter Lights. I call them Christmas lights. They've lit up Dublin throughout December since 2018 as part of our Christmas celebrations, and that's where I believe they belong. If Councillors Ring and Burke bring forward an emergency motion to reverse this decision, I will fully support it. A change like this should involve proper engagement with elected councillors. Give the councillors, and more importantly the people of Dublin they represent, some respect. If it's not broken, don't fix it. Keep our Christmas lights at Christmas, and give St Brigid's Day the celebration it deserves in its own right. 🎄

“Just in relation to the photographs being shared, I want to clear something up once and then leave it there. Keelan’s mother personally invited me to attend the event. It was a cross-border Tourette’s awareness event involving lots of young children and their families. Michelle O’Neill of Sinn Féin was separately invited by the event organisers. That had absolutely nothing to do with me. Yes, we ended up in the same photograph. It was simply a photograph at an event we had both been invited to attend. My political disagreements with Sinn Féin have not changed. I believe they have turned their backs on many working-class communities, and my position on immigration and other issues hasn’t suddenly changed because I appeared in a photograph. But that day wasn’t about Sinn Féin, immigration, left or right. It was about raising awareness for those young people. That’s what mattered to me and that’s why I was there. Keelan made an appearance on the Late Late Toy Show. He’s an excellent young lad, and both he and his mother are lovely people who are simply trying to raise awareness. They should be left out of any political arguments over a photograph. If you disagree with me politically, have a go at me. That comes with being in public life. But please leave my partner out of it as well. We have five young children and we work together as a team. She helps me and I help her. That’s how our family works. I’m not going to attack anybody over this or get involved in arguments online. I’ve explained why I was there and that’s all I’m going to say on it.

This should be a massive wake-up call for the Government. Almost 7 in 10 young adults are considering leaving Ireland for a better quality of life. And can you really blame them? People cannot afford to buy a home, rents are through the roof and thousands are caught in the middle — earning too much to qualify for social housing but nowhere near enough to afford a home of their own. We constantly hear that Ireland is a rich country and that the economy is doing brilliantly. But what does that mean to someone who works every week and still cannot afford somewhere secure to live? If we keep losing young, skilled and educated people, there will be consequences. Who is going to build our homes, staff our hospitals, run our businesses and pay the taxes that fund public services 10 or 20 years from now? Then add the cost of food, fuel, electricity and heating as winter approaches. A rich country should be a country where ordinary working people can afford to live and build a future. Right now, far too many young people clearly don't believe Ireland offers them that future.

USC – 15 YEARS LATER, WHY ARE WE STILL PAYING IT? The Universal Social Charge was introduced by the Fianna Fáil–Green Government in Budget 2011, at the height of the financial crisis. It came into effect on 1 January 2011 and was presented at the time as an emergency/temporary measure. We are long past that recession and the bailout era. Then in 2016, Simon Harris described USC as a “hated temporary USC” and said it had been introduced as an “emergency and temporary measure.” Fine Gael went into that election promising to abolish it. Watch the video below. That was 2016. This is 2026. Ten years later, USC is still on our payslips. That speaks for itself.

Helen McEntee and Jim O’Callaghan have serious questions to answer over the handling of protected disclosures and the justice system. Accountability must come from the top. In my view, it is time for both Ministers to hand in their tools and resign.
