Requiring a driver in a driverless car doesn’t make sense. Minneapolis is open for business, open to innovative technology, and open to a variety of transportation options. Thoughtful regulation for safety is necessary, but not through a backdoor ban. kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/…

There are groups out there that constantly pretend they just want better policy when their actual goal is to preserve the status quo.
Scoop: Enviros held a call Thurs in which progressive opponents tried to rally fence-sitters against the permitting bill. I obtained the transcript. "We really have to have a pretty clear agreement by all parties that this is an effort to stop this bill, not to make it better"

This is a lovely and short book, one of my favorites, that is a great antidote to snobs like Bloom and Adler. One might not like Rowling specifically for principled reasons, but general contempt for commercial fiction is stupid.
we are to recall the words of harold bloom

A search through the entire Harry Potter collection (3623 pages) reveals exactly one instance of "stretch his legs" (p. 14) and zero instances of "stretched his legs". kvongcmehsanalibrary.wordpress.com/wp-content/upl…

It feels like we’re entering a time when reading and writing will be much less important, and people may soon yearn for the days that kids were devouring commercial fiction.

People should have kids but some of the loneliest people I know are empty nesters who used children as their primary social network. People need community and friends, not just family.
People overthink so many parts of life.

His problem was he spent his whole life thinking he wasn’t getting it, people weren’t giving it to him. Then he realized they were trying, and he didn’t even know what IT is

My answer to the socializing discourse is that more people need to be bar trivia maxxing. It’s hard to get attendance at sporadic events like dinner parties these days. Much easier to have a predictable recurring event that only has to be organized once.

You meet people on other teams, you become regulars at the bar, you can add new friends easily. It’s the ultimate social activity. I am talking myself into getting this going again

In the absence of relatively concrete analysis, based on well-vetted theory showing big looming harms, we shouldn't regulation stuff heavily until we've seen an empirical track record of concrete harms in need of prevention.

What an insane, stupid policy.
Minneapolis would be the first city in the U.S. to require monitors in driverless cars if the council gives final approval to the measure later this week. startribune.com/minneapolis-…

Will be interesting if this is actually changed. Feel like all the perennial MVP candidates lately are offensive juggernauts who do this every drive
NBA refs will have a new emphasis on off-arm push-offs by offensive players for the 2026-2027 season.

Liked The Big Short book so much that I revisited the movie, and wow I forgot how much it sucks

It is long past time for @MetroTransitMN to fare gate its grade separated stops. Lake Street/Midtown and both airport stations are well situated for fare gates!
Cracking down on fare evasion reduces crime on the subway significantly. If we want the subway to be safe and clean, farebeaters need to face consequences, says @emmma_camp_. Subscribe to Free Expression: on.wsj.com/4rxSOMW

It’s a little bit funny that a social scene that constantly ponders hypotheticals like β€œwhat if you had to have sex with a dog or everyone in the world would die. Would you do it?” Is now confronted by a real life situation that basically comes down to β€œwhat if having fewer and less public sex parties would result in a smaller chance of everyone dying?”

This is why the only sensible prior for things like god is 0%. Otherwise the practice of multiplying by infinity commits you to all sorts of silly things.

There are obviously real people making valuable contributions to AI discussions right now, but I can’t help but notice that a lot of other people just skip past the part where you’re supposed to offer arguments and just say we should believe b/c some other smart person does.
Can you explain why you are so overwhelmingly confident in this when virtually every serious philosopher who has weighed in on the subject has admitted serious uncertainty and when it's unclear what our best theories of consciousness say about digital sentience? Can you explain why virtually no eminent philosopher of mind anywhere in the world shares your brazen overconfidence? Would you debate, say @simondgoldstein or @LedermanHarvey on the subject of whether AI sentience is astronomically improbable? Surely if this position is so absurd that believing it is evidence of mental dysfunction (a form of dysfunction curiously common among the leading philosophers of mind) you should have no trouble debating one of its proponents.
