At the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, placed youth development and climate justice at the centre of Namibia’s development agenda. The President highlighted Namibia’s efforts to prepare young people to participate meaningfully in emerging industries, including oil and gas, renewable energy and green hydrogen. Building the skills and capabilities of young Namibians is critical to ensuring that the country’s natural resources and emerging industries translate into employment, entrepreneurship and long-term economic opportunities. To date, Namibia has awarded close to 270 scholarships in fields related to renewable energy and green technologies. On climate change, President Nandi-Ndaitwah underscored the imbalance faced by Namibia and other developing countries: despite contributing a very small share of global greenhouse-gas emissions, they remain highly exposed to droughts, rising temperatures and increasing pressure on agriculture and water resources. The Summit brought together governments, development partners, investors, technology providers and project developers to advance green hydrogen and Power-to-X projects from ambition towards bankable implementation. Ahead of the official opening, NGH2P participated in a technical leadership engagement involving, among others, South Africa’s Green Hydrogen Just Energy Transition Investment Plan PMO, the 🇪🇺 , 🇩🇪 , 🇩🇰 , GIZ South Africa, Lesotho & eSwatini, GIZ Namibia , & private-sector players. Discussions focused on the current market realities facing green hydrogen, viable business models, technology, financing, skills, localisation and how African and European partners can jointly build commercially sustainable value chains. On Tuesday, 🇳🇦 participated in discussions on “From National Strategies to Delivery Institutions: What Governments Need to Build to Get to Gigawatts,” where Mukendwa joined counterparts from 🇿🇦 , 🇰🇪 & the African Green Hydrogen Alliance to share experiences on institutional coordination, project support and investment mobilisation. On Wednesday, he joined the Three Capes regional integration panel, examining how 🇳🇦 , the Northern Cape, Western Cape and Eastern Cape can connect infrastructure, industries and investment into a wider Western SADC hydrogen ecosystem. NGH2P also participated in a GIZ-led discussion on linking green hydrogen, batteries & critical minerals to localisation, beneficiation, employment & regional value creation. The Summit also saw financing announcements, including a €20 million EU grant, with potential to mobilise a further €200 million through KfW for 🇿🇦 , an additional €37 million through the Global Gateway, and US$20 million in reimbursable grant funding from the African Development Bank for projects in 🇲🇦 , 🇪🇬 , 🇿🇦 and 🇳🇦 . Such commitments are important for de-risking emerging projects and strengthening investor confidence. Namibia has been ranked second among the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets, driven largely by the rapid expansion of solar power, according to an analysis by the World Resources Institute (WRI). The analysis, updated in August 2026, places Namibia alongside Uruguay, the Netherlands and Denmark among countries that have come closest to achieving the pace of solar and wind growth required globally. The assessment measures the rate at which countries have increased the share of solar and wind in their electricity generation rather than their total installed renewable energy capacity. According to WRI, Uruguay, Namibia, the Netherlands and Denmark have achieved about three-quarters of the annual global growth rate required between 2025 and 2030. Namibia will develop its emerging oil and gas sector alongside green hydrogen and other renewable energy industries as it seeks to increase energy supply and accelerate industrialisation, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has said. Speaking at Unstoppable Africa 2026 in New York, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the country would not choose between hydrocarbons and green energy, but would pursue both as part of a broader energy mix. “Namibia having also now discovered the oil and gas, for us it is not a question of a choice between green hydrogen and the oil and gas, but rather a mix for them to complement one another,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said. Namibia is targeting an increase in the contribution of secondary industries to 25% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, as the government pushes to expand manufacturing and reduce the country's reliance on raw material exports.
