To be clear, the attack on Parkrun by anti-trans activists has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with fairness in sport, or placings, or any bullshit that they put out, it is fundamentally about Parkrun being a community event accepting trans people in the community as trans people. 1/
I’m no former Olympian, but I expect fairness at parkrun.
My best time wouldn’t be a patch on Mara Yamauchi’s, but I was First Lady at my parkrun once - and I’d have been fuming if a man claiming to be a woman had cheated me out of that placing. Or pushed me down a few places.
I’ve been involved in parkrun for more than a decade - as a runner, volunteer and now an event director.
And I have never met a parkrunner who doesn’t care about their time or placing, regardless of age, ability or fitness.
That is just as true at the back of the pack as it is at the front.
If nobody cared about times or placings, they wouldn’t turn up every Saturday morning for a timed event with a start line, a finish line and numbered finishing positions.
They wouldn’t register for a barcode so they could receive a result.
And parkrun wouldn’t publish those results every week, in finishing order, complete with times and positions.
You can try to rewrite the parkrun story to suit your agenda, but the “it’s only a fun run” argument is nonsense.
Enjoyment and fairness are not opposites.
Women deserve fair sport - at every level.
