The Free Speech Movement in Berkeley began on Oct. 1, 1964 when Jack Weinberg was arrested for sitting in Sproul Plaza at a table supporting the Congress of Racial Equality. 3,000 students surrounded the police car. A 32-hour stand-off ensued, people speaking from the car's roof.

Ben Weed became a teacher and, in 1898, the principal of Sonoma Union High School. Later he became the first English professor at the College of Marin. In 1903, Weed was invited to speak at the dedication of The Greek Theatre and described finding the spot.

Ben Weed, Class of 1894, was born Sept. 30, 1869. In 1894, Weed found a bowl-shaped spot on the eastern edge of campus had outstanding acoustics. The site, called "Ben Weed's Amphitheatre," became site of meetings and ceremonies. 10 years later, the Greek Theatre was built there.
