The blue checks are writing fan fiction on Twitter
Waiter: “Sir, your bill is $420.”
Me: “My bill? I only ordered a sandwich and a drink.”
The waiter turned the screen toward me.
There were charges for a three-course meal, two bottles of wine, and a birthday cake.
Me: “You’ve brought me somebody else’s bill.”
Waiter: “I’m afraid the reservation was made under your name.”
I checked the receipt. My full name was printed at the top.
I’d never been to this restaurant before.
I asked to speak to the manager, who arrived with a tired expression.
Manager: “Sir, we had a party of six tonight. The reservation was made online, and the person who booked it gave your name and phone number.”
Me: “Well, I wasn’t part of that party.”
He checked his computer.
Manager: “The reservation also included a note saying the host would settle the bill at the end.”
Me: “Then find the host. I’m not paying for a meal I didn’t eat.”
The manager asked the waiter to show me the party.
They were still sitting at a table near the back, laughing and taking pictures.
I walked over with the manager.
Me: “Excuse me. Who made this reservation?”
A man in a blue shirt raised his hand.
Man: “I did. Is there a problem?”
I showed him the receipt.
Me: “Why is my name on your bill?”
He glanced at it and laughed.
Man: “Oh, you’re the guy from the group chat!”
I had no idea what he was talking about.
Then he pulled out his phone and showed me a screenshot.
My name and photograph were at the top of a group chat I’d never seen before.
And beneath them was a message that made my stomach turn.
