Overcrowding in A&E departments and corridor care is linked to hundreds of deaths every week in the UK, according to a new study. A review of more than 19,000 adult patients found that, for every 10% increase in emergency department occupancy, the chance of dying in the following 28 days rose by 1%. The work was carried out at 134 A&Es in Wales, Northern Ireland and England last year, and was presented at the European Emergency Medicine Congress in France.

The RAC has told Good Morning Britain that the UK could hit the highest ever pump price for diesel on Friday and warned that prices will keep rising while global instability continues. A tank of petrol for a 55-litre family car now costs £95.33, and the diesel equivalent is £108.76. These figures are up £22.27 and £30.45 respectively, compared with the start of the Iran-US conflict on February 28.

"If you can work, you should work." That's the message from the Conservatives this morning, as they unveil plans to cut benefits by 30% for some people who remain out of work. The sisters of the suspect in the "Putney Pusher" case are calling on the police to help clear their brother's name, they believe he was innocent. The case dates back to 2017, when a woman was pushed into the path of a moving bus on Putney Bridge by a jogger. She narrowly escaped being hit. Nicholas Brandram was arrested in June this year in connection with the incident. But just over a week ago, he was found dead at his home in west London. His sisters, Alexia Hicks and Sophie Voelcker, say police have DNA evidence which they believe could prove his innocence.

Anti-migrant activist Daniel Thomas has said he has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, according to a video he posted overnight on social media. Detectives have been investigating an incident in the Channel, in which a dinghy was allegedly slashed with a blade while a rescue worker was on board. It comes as the Home Secretary ordered an urgent review into smugglers, after two migrant boats landed on UK shores without being intercepted.
