The thing is ... I love this site. It's the most favorite thing I've ever worked on. I wrote this almost the same week I started working on Twitter (then Obvious 1.0). Despite everything I still believe it. And I still believe no matter what the dream won't die here.

So it’s not as tho open standards and industry coordination are absent in the history of making flight safer. Particularly with respect to public reporting on incidents and definition of standards which the video highlights in a way that I think is super useful and correct.
But the example of flight, in particular, shows that both safety and consumer confidence require building on top of a regulatory floor.

"But the people saying this are weirdos" is a bad counter to any argument. In the context of AI it's outright baffling.
The Tech Model Railroad Club was weird. The phone phreaks were weird. The Homebrew Computer Club was weird. Stallman and the crew at MIT AI lab were weird.
Bell Labs guys wore suits but they were still plenty weird. Whole Earth Catalog and the WELL were weird. ~All of Usenet was weirdos.
If there's a single industry that should understand the value of weird subcultures and personalities in driving innovation and developing important new ideas, it's computing!

When I flew off aircraft carriers and launched into space, we fixed problems before people got hurt. That's why I'm introducing the Make AI Work for Americans Act, which taxes the companies benefiting the most from AI and uses that money to invest in workers and give them more opportunities.

Bari Weiss just finished speaking at a ceremony in Berlin ahead of Peter Thiel being awarded the Axel Springer 2026 Award. (Sorry for the poor video quality.)
Weiss listed out some of her differences with Thiel. Among them: "And of course there's a difference in our attitude, at least sometimes, toward the press, and to the vital role that it plays in maintaining a liberal democracy. I view it as essential. It's my life's work. I see it as an instrument of liberty. And as an engine of progress that deserves to be in invested in and perfected."

OpenAI friends, it’s not too late to call on Greg Brockman to cancel his commitment to Leading the Future.
You have more leverage than anyone here.
I suspect a huge story that’s not being told right now is a likely hidden conflict between OpenAI and Andreessen Horowitz.
Journalists need to be asking if Greg Brockman is going to fulfill his pledge to @LeadingFutureAI.
They need to ask if Sam is okay that LTF surrogates like @NathanLeamerDC are now constantly bashing him and OAI, who they have admitted to working for.
Either there is a major cleavage opening up here or it’s all a ruse. Both would be extremely important and newsworthy!
