Web3 artists and curators love casting themselves as knights-errant, revolutionary chivalric spirit fully unlocked, riding straight at the "trad art establishment" like Don Quixote aiming at a giant he thinks needs slaying. I get the appeal. I've worn that armour... Reread Don Quixote instead: there's no giant, just a windmill, a machine, a structure, and it always wins. Not because it's strong, but because it was never the enemy to start with. Just a machine, grinding grain for people somewhere who still need the bread. Whether it's Saracens or Barbarians at the Gates, even the institution we pretend to fight isn't sure who's actually storming the walls anymore. Why are we doing it, anyway? For the artists? The culture? The money? No time to ask ! Gotta keep riding, blinding helmet on. Every time we land a real hit on "the establishment," look at who bleeds first. Not the people at the top, not the gatekeepers. The artists still building careers through that gallery. The collectors who trusted the infrastructure to be standing next year. No wonder they end up resenting us.. Are we really trying to build anything, or is disruption just another word for destruction? This is how we build another machine designed for turning existing structures into rubble.. At every charge we break our lances. We get laughed at by the people we thought we were saving. And the actual enemy (our own short-termism, our allergy to anything built to outlast a cycle) walks right past us, unbothered. So what do we do? Same old, same old. We pick up the pike and the torches, ready to charge again. Sometimes we just change targets and go after a flock of sheep that couldn't be bothered either. Stop fighting windmills. Go find the real enemy, if we can even be patient enough to agree on who that is.
