A staggering 8-9 billion solar panels have been deployed globally—yet up to 90% are on a direct trajectory to recycling or landfill.
While modern solar panels are technically made of roughly 95% recyclable materials (glass, aluminum, copper, and silicon), recycling currently runs at a steep economic loss.
The cost: Processing runs $500–$1,000 per tonne ($10 to $40 per panel).
The yield: Recovered material values fail to cover basic transport fees.
Compared with minimal landfill fees, market economics dictate landfill as the default. We are already seeing a preview of this crisis in the wind sector, where an expected 43 million tonnes of turbine blade waste by 2050 has led several European nations—including Austria, Germany, Finland, and the Netherlands—to ban decommissioned blades from landfills.
Solar is hitting the exact same brick wall. Early installations are reaching the end of their 20-to-25-year lifespans, while tens of millions more are being prematurely retired due to efficiency upgrades or repowering incentives.
This has triggered a severe regulatory Catch-22. To prevent heavy metals like lead and cadmium from leaching into soil and water, jurisdictions like Victoria in Australia have banned solar panels from landfills as hazardous e-waste.
Yet, commercial recycling has become one more bottleneck in one long story of failure. International energy bodies try to argue that leaching risks from intact or managed panels are within standard safety thresholds. But the sheer volume of impending e-scrap presents a scary reality. The 'clean energy' transition has become a multi-generational hazardous waste nightmare.
If recycling is cost-prohibitive and landfill is illegal, where are those billions of panels meant to go?

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has signalled that immigrant workers already in Ireland may be able to qualify for citizenship under the existing five year rule.
This is despite the incoming law change requiring a person be resident in Ireland for eight years.

Laverne Cox. Ella Morgan.
Both are transgender women. Both live and present publicly as women.
Now imagine telling either of them that, because of the sex they were born, they should walk into the men’s toilets.
What happens next?
How safe would they feel? How would the men around them react? How many questions, confrontations or humiliations might follow?
This isn’t theoretical to me.
My daughter is a trans woman. Like many trans women, you wouldn’t know she was trans unless she chose to tell you.
And the current situation has consequences for her everyday life.
She worries so much about being challenged when using public facilities that she sometimes avoids drinking when she is out so that she won’t need to use a toilet.
Read that again.
A young woman deliberately restricts how much she drinks because she is frightened about what might happen if she needs the loo.
As her mother, I find that completely unacceptable.
Whatever your position on the Supreme Court judgment, surely we should be capable of acknowledging the human consequences of how it is interpreted and implemented.
Women’s safety and privacy matter. I am a woman. Of course they matter to me.
But trans people’s safety, privacy and dignity matter too.
These things do not have to be mutually exclusive.
So I keep coming back to a very simple question:
What is the humane, workable answer for women like these?
Because saying “use the men’s” may sound remarkably simple from behind a keyboard.
Living it is something else entirely.
