On 4 July I’m doing the @alzheimerssoc Trek26 marathon in the Lake District. My dad died of Alzheimer’s in 2024. Funds are needed for research, to support those living with Alzheimer’s, as well as those caring for them. Donations greatly appreciated. justgiving.com/fundraising/G…

We're proud to support Open Science Badges, an initiative that promotes transparency and reproducibility. So far, seven articles earned a badge for open practices. But none have yet received the Preregistered badge. We strongly encourage preregistration for confirmatory studies.

That’s right, because academics are just income streams according to the bean counters. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Academia’s obsession with grant income.
Not meeting the target will result in a 10% salary decrement every six months to a minimum base of $50K a year — an amount lower than the salary of most postdoctoral researchers. dukechronicle.com/article/20…

Why is the historically-esteemed journal @BJSM_BMJ publishing unequivocally poor research, just because transwomen are included in the studies? It makes no sense. We wrote a response to highlight some of the major flaws in the Alvares et al. (2025) paper.. bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2…

What makes exploratory research valuable? We discuss 6 factors: 1) Large and 2) Uncommon sample 3) Rigorous data collection 4) Widely used measures that 5) Reveal a coherent pattern across variables and 6) The potential to generate questions. doi.org/10.1080/02640414.202…

Sometimes you need a carrot, sometimes you need a (small) stick. @JSportsSci we've introduced a mandatory sample size estimation and justification section to manuscripts. The rationale is outlined in the editorial. Editorial tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.… IFA tandfonline.com/action/autho…

New preprint -> osf.io/preprints/osf/dqk8u (1) the native Apple Watch Activity app underestimates criterion relative moderate intensity. (2) a 40% HRR target (via a bespoke AW app) helps the user reach the criterion intensity. @ashleywarner71 @NatalieVanicek @acbkiwi @TDmyersMT

The wording in Trump’s executive order is fine (well, I dislike “conception” but that’s a minor quibble). Sex is determined at fertilisation. We can predict the sex class of an embryo well before any sex phenotype develops, and with almost-perfect reliability. Human embryos do not all start as female. This is a scientifically-illiterate claim.
