Confederate soldiers were called “graybacks” because the Confederate Army was associated with gray uniforms, in contrast to the Union Army’s blue uniforms.
The nickname literally pointed to the gray cloth on the soldiers’ backs.
There was often an insulting edge to it, especially when Union troops used the term.
