For many years, I kept my connection to 9/11 private.
Partly out of deference.
Partly because I didn’t know what to say.
And partly because I was still trying to bridge a quiet gap of learning how to carry the largest personal loss of my life when it also happened to belong to the entire world.
Then last year, I decided to open the door.
I shared on Shark Tank how losing my dad at 10 years old inspired a way for parents and grandparents to record their voices and memories, so their families would always have them.
When I shared that connection, the flood of messages I received changed something in me. It turns out, when you step into the light with your story, you give other people permission to make sense of theirs.
A quarter century later, I've stopped trying to find the "right" words and just wrote the true ones. And as the 9/11 25th anniversary approaches this week, I'm grateful to The New York Times for giving me the platform to share them.
