Bryce Dallas Howard moderating the Signs Q&A with M. Night Shyamalan was one of the best, most emotional conversations I've ever had the pleasure of watching. What a real treat. Incredible philosophy and invaluable insight. #BeyondFest
#Sender is a RADICAL debut from Russell Goldman boasting a sizzlingly singular performance from Britt Lower! Effectively channeling early Soderbergh, Aronofsky, and Boyle with its grungy Y2K aesthetic, sickly claustrophobia, and neurotic cadence. Fully immerses you inside the mind of an addict in what is one of the most authentic and unnerving portraits I've ever seen. Perfectly captures the little nuances and habits; the unfinished tasks, obsession, lies, and increasing paranoia that turns everything into a high to quiet the withdrawals. A transference of addiction that shifts the focus outward instead of within. That, coupled with its more contemporary examination of the corporations and technology that create a culture of culture addicts, I found incredibly insightful. Helluva start for Goldman! Can't wait to see more.
incredible the amount that PRIMETIME depicts the entire TO CATCH A PREDATOR enterprise as analogous to the invasion of Iraq and the search for WMDs -- our absolute American certainty that force is the only way forward, no matter the truth, as long as it's *our* truth. good movie.
#Primetime knocked me on my ass. Lance Oppenheim crafts such a haunting composite of the post-9/11 zeitgeist, where the lines between revenge and justice are blurred as escalating media spectacle trivializes the darkest corners of our society exploiting a collective anger, hostility, and confusion amidst a cultural tailspin. Hansen’s show becomes the warped stage upon which he deflects from his own sins while a nation tries to exorcise theirs; a soul-sucking abyss that reflects it all back at us revealing the sheer meaninglessness and futility of it all.
Oppenheim takes his incredible knack for media collage and applies it here, creating a feverish experience that explores the overlap of reality, fiction, and news. He recontextualizes the gritty realism and grungy aesthetic of 00s entertainment to expose a shameless depravity and an addiction to consuming outrage and spectacle without resolution, one that’s only become amplified in the decades since. A truly chilling trip into the void I can't shake.
A24, Sony and The New York Times are among the companies who have submitted interest in acquiring Letterboxd.

Very happy to make my debut on @ThePlaylistNews with this preview piece on Netflix’s RAY GUNN, the latest from Brad Bird. I had the pleasure of talking to Bird about it, and based on his comments and what I saw of the film, it could be a great one:

First trailer for ‘RAY GUNN’, directed by Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles’).
The film follows a private detective who is drawn into a case involving aliens & murder in the alternate futuristic city Metropia.
Releasing December 18 on Netflix.
DIGGER isn't just one of the boldest major studio films in a bit; it's also one of the most abrasive. Iňárritu's antagonism threatens to derail it, but the sheer exuberant charisma & integrity of Tom Cruise's performance sees it through. A subversively angry nail in WB's coffin.
Robert Eggers is set to direct a new film adaptation of ‘ROMEO AND JULIET’.
The film will feature the actors speaking in Olde English.

Unsurprising but odd...really makes you wonder what it was all for? Compromised and botched the first season, finally found their footing in Season 2, only to be canceled in Season 3 just as they were turning the page. Strange era for Daredevil they could never quite figure out.
