The Bureau of Land Management says a wildfire burned two thirds of their food. A drought dried up their water. So the agency planned to remove EVERY wild horse from Riddle Mountain, Oregon. All 418 of them. They called it a rescue. The horses would be held off the range for about two years. BLM says the burned range needs a break from grazing. The horses live on this land by federal law, but the cows graze on it by permit only. The environmental and wild horse groups that sued say cattle were still out there when a judge asked. And only one of them was being told to leave. Is this also DEI for cows? Across the land it manages, the agency authorizes enough forage for 631,412 cows and their calves, compared to ALL of America's wild horses and burros: 26,785 (BLM 2022 data, via Return to Freedom). I can't get past that number. I keep thinking about these horses, waiting on a courtroom with winter coming. And about the 14,830 wild horses and burros BLM has targeted for removal this year. BLM's own target for that range is just 33 to 56 horses. That plan would return just enough to reach the low end: 33. And Western Watersheds Project's director says 33 horses is too few to keep a herd genetically healthy. Why the emergency? The groups say they had been in court for two years, and BLM had agreed to hold off on a roundup. Then it announced an "emergency" the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. Is this not a little suspicious from an agency we've already come to not trust? The groups say BLM had already hired contractors to round up the horses, including a $436,500 helicopter contract. They say the judge saw through the last-minute emergency, worried it looked like gamesmanship, and said no way. So a judge blocked the roundup a day before it began. That's a temporary restraining order, a short-term pause that does not decide who is right. Another hearing is coming, and the horses stay on the range for now. The agency warns fall storms could close the roads before it can reach the horses. If there isn't enough food for the horses, why is there enough for the cows? Trump's budget request for 2027 left out the long-standing protection against sending healthy wild horses to slaughter. His 2026 request left it out too. Congress kept it in the final law last year anyway (via Roll Call). BLM can legally sell wild horses. The petition says once they're sold, they lose federal protection, with little oversight of where they end up. It asks Congress for a full audit of those sales. A Black cadet at West Point was found unconscious in his room, tied to his own bed, with his ears slashed. The academy's conclusion was that he had done it to himself. Johnson Whittaker. 1880. He was one of the first Black cadets ever admitted. He had been ostracised for three years — no roommate would share with him, no cadet would speak to him. On the morning of April 6, 1880, he was found beaten, bound, and bleeding on the floor of his quarters. West Point convened an inquiry and decided he had staged the whole thing to win sympathy. Then it court-martialled HIM. He was convicted. The conviction was eventually thrown out by the President on legal grounds — and the army discharged him anyway on a technicality about an exam. He became a teacher and a lawyer and never talked about it much. In 1995 — one hundred and fifteen years later — the United States finally issued him a commission as a second lieutenant.
