🚨Breaking A high school boy has been found to be quietly participating on a girls' varsity soccer team in Maine. Only a freshman this year, Raphael "Violet" Wedick has been the star forward of the South Portland High School "girls'" varsity team, scoring a hat trick in their first conference game of the season and the team's only two goals in their most recent game. South Portland is currently 3-1 in conference play. 🧵1/5

2/5 Wedick has also been active in the club soccer scene and has played on teams with the South Portland Strikers club since 2021. The Strikers club is affiliated with USSF, the governing soccer body in the USA. Despite the USOPC requirements that national governing bodies update their policies to exclude males from the female category, USSF's policy remains unchanged, allowing participation by "gender identity." At the moment, USSF is violating USOPC ruling and only offers mixed teams rather than single-sex competition. Wedick's most recent participation with the team was in the fall of 2025, after the new directive.

3/5 In addition to soccer, Wedick also ran cross country on his middle school team in the "girls'" division in 2025. While results are not readily available, he appears in at least two meets, one in which he placed 3rd out of 55 runners. It's possible he may participate in track and field in the girls' division next spring as well.

4/5 In a now-deleted article, "Violet's" mother, Emily Wedick, describes how she had dreamed of giving birth to twin girls before giving birth to her son. Raphael is described as a very typical boy, throwing away dolls that were offered to him and preferring engineering toys, construction trucks and the Incredible Hulk. After his baby sister was born, however, he allegedly began telling his parents his name was "Violet" and wanting to wear dresses, so his parents began pretending he was a girl when he was only four years old.

5/5 Wedick's participation comes on the heels of the Maine Supreme Court's removal of a citizen referendum from the November ballot that would allow a vote on whether or not to allow boy's on girls' teams, turning the "girls" division into mixed sex instead. This sort of controversy is not new in Maine. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Maine Principal's Association allowed boys on girls' teams in sports such as gymnastics and field hockey, leading to situations like Christopher Crook leading the Orono "girls'" field hockey team to an Eastern Maine Class C Championship runner-up title in 1987. The issue has already faced decades of legal battles, which female athletes ultimately won in the state, and it seems now they will have to fight the same battle once again. "The evidence establishes that there is a substantial relationships between excluding boys from playing [girls'] field hockey and providing equal opportunities for girls in athletics."

Mom was convinced she was having twin girls. Ended up with a boy. After she got the daughter she always wanted, boy who had been stereotypically masculine suddenly starts pretending to be a girl. Mom then proceeds to turn him into the second girl she always wanted. Very clear instance of parental favoritism by the mother for her daughter and her son's attempt to be loved in the same way. Just awful.

The one area where it’s genuinely tricky are sports that don’t have a boys equivalent, in this case, field hockey.
