✨ It wasn’t until I first saw the Saxon crypt at St Wystan’s, Repton, that I understood John Betjeman’s words: ‘Holy air encased in stone.’ I’ve never felt the past so close, or found such comfort in feeling rooted in a longer story. A real hidden gem, a must see.

For Michaelmas Day, one from my recent travels. Medieval wall painting from St James, South Leigh (Oxfordshire) featuring St Michael weighing souls and the Virgin Mary dropping rosary beads onto the scales to weigh it in her (and the soul's) favour.
Remembering Annie Jane (née Thompson) wife of former blacksmith James William Jowett, who died on this day in 1900 at the age of 38. Interred with her husband's paternal grandparents Isaac (d. 1877) and Betty Jowett (d. 1873). James William died in June 1908, aged 42.
The late 15th-century St George and the Dragon at Pickering, Yorkshire North Riding.
To the lower right is the Hermit from the large painting of St Christopher.
In our director’s new book, Church Crawling, she writes about several churches in our care and our members will get an opportunity to hear more about those churches and the book more generally in an exclusive online talk.

The late 15th century wall paintings at Pickering, Yorkshire North Riding.
I recorded the church in 2012 but my images of the paintings were not my best work, so I revisited and photographed them again yesterday.
The stained glass in the east window of St Cynhaearn's, Ynyscynhaearn glistens like a jewel and adds a splash of vibrant colour to the otherwise somber interior of this late Georgian estate church.

The Old Priory and St Iltud’s Church, Caldey Island
The chancel appears to be the oldest part of the structure and this was probably originally used as the community's #church.

Medieval floor tile from Hyde Abbey in Winchester. The Benedictine abbey was located near the city walls. The tile is now part of the collections at Winchester City Museum. 📸 My own. #TilesOnTuesday#HydeAbbey#Winchester
The mid-12th century door at Stillingfleet, Yorkshire East Riding.
The door's ironwork features two people and what seems to be a Viking longship. Nail hole evidence indicates there was also a tree and a mast on the ship.
