Students at High Tech High Chula Vista know Enrique Lugo, affectionately known as "Chikle," as a caring Dean of Students who encourages them to dream big and express themselves authentically. Now, the broader San Diego community can experience his creativity on an even larger canvas. The Arts District Liberty Station recently selected Chikle as one of two artists commissioned for its prestigious Installations at the Station public art program. His new mural, "Estación Libertad," celebrates the shared culture and creativity of the San Diego–Tijuana border region through bold imagery inspired by American traditional tattoo art. Featuring symbols like monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, nopales, lowriders, and even spaceships, the mural tells a story of resilience, migration, imagination, and community. As the proud son of Mexican immigrants, Chikle brings the same passion for creativity, culture, and human-centered education to his artwork that he brings to our students each day. Isabella Corrales, a rising senior at High Tech High Mesa, completed a month-long internship with CEO Dr. Diana Cornejo-Sanchez, gaining first-hand insight into educational leadership and the inner workings of the school system. Isabella described the experience as fast-paced but deeply enriching — she grew as a leader, learned to adapt, and felt genuinely supported by HTH staff and outside leaders alike. The internship boosted her confidence and clarity about her future. Diana reflects that she hoped to model leading with love and for community. She found that Isabella already embodied those qualities. On June 2nd, we hosted all of our High Tech High 8th-10th graders at our HTH Point Loma Campus, where they experienced three 45-minute rotations featuring a college fair, a leadership keynote speaker, mock interviews, career panels, and hands-on career workshops. Seeing 20 charter buses line up in our Liberty Station Parking lot and our students in their professional clothing, with lanyards on and folders with their resumes in tow, was so incredible! It was so cool to see our students receive in-person interview feedback, get their career path questions answered, dive into robotics, micropetting, performing CPR and using AEDs, learn about finance and pharmaceuticals, design a city with constraints, and talk to reps about their academic and extracurricular programming. Such enormous gratitude to our professional volunteers and college reps who took time out of their busy days to be present with our students, offer advice and feedback, and connect with our students as individuals! Each year, the school community gathers to honor seniors who have received college acceptances and finalized their postsecondary plans. Support High Tech Eats 🍎 Please support our scratch cooking by encouraging your students to get school breakfast and lunch! It is free for all students. Students get school lunch less in April, May and June. We anticipate a drop of about 30,000 lunches alone between now and the end of the year, which means a huge loss in revenue for our kitchens. We want to keep our scratch-cook program going strong through the end of the year, so please don't forget about us! Here are a few easy ways you can support: Encourage students to grab breakfast and lunch (it’s free for students!) For current HTH students, De’Andre’s advice is simple: “Keep all options open and don’t burn any bridges. You don’t have to have it all figured out right now—just keep progressing toward something.” Today, as De’Andre supports historic space missions and serves his country, he remains connected to the High Tech High community. A sibling is currently attending HTH. His journey is proof that paths aren’t always linear, but preparation matters. “By finishing my education, it kept the door open for me to become a military officer,” he said. “I didn’t figure this path was for me until after graduating from college. …I’m a big dreamer. The HTH robotics team was part of the winning alliance that took the FIRST Robotics World competition in Houston this past weekend. The FIRST Championship is the world’s largest celebration of student STEM, bringing together more than 50,000 participants from over 100 countries. Only approximately 600 of the top teams globally qualify to compete at the Houston event. From High Tech High Chula Vista to the bright lights of Major League Soccer ⚽✨ We’re proud to celebrate Jude Terry, a South County native and former High Tech Chula Vista student, who is making his mark at just 17 years old with LAFC. This includes earning Goal of the Matchday honors with 41.3% of the fan vote in April 👏. Before the bright lights of MLS, Jude and his sister, Sadie, were part of the HTCV community. As shared by his mom, Claudia: “Being a part of the High Tech High Chula Vista school community helped our family achieve life-changing dreams… so much of their confidence comes from project-based learning at High Tech.” This Saturday, Jude returns home as LAFC faces SDFC at Snapdragon Stadium.
