Joffre Lakes Provincial Park was closed to the general public in June, and now it is being closed again in September, with access restricted during these periods for exclusive Indigenous use. The repeated closures have raised serious questions about public access to provincially funded parks. A group of lawyers has sent a legal letter to the NDP government arguing that the restrictions may violate Charter rights and provincial law. I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of MLA Joan Phillip. Although we came from different political parties and did not always share the same views, I had the opportunity to stand alongside Joan at several community events, including this year’s GAIA Lunar New Year seniors’ gathering. Even while courageously battling cancer, her passion, strength, and dedication to her community were truly admirable. My sincere condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and community. The NDP government is planning to transfer of more than 300,000 acres of Crown land, including some of Vancouver Island’s most valuable and iconic public lands, without meaningful public consultation. From Victoria waterfront and land next to the Legislature to provincial parks and Royal Roads, British Columbians deserve to know exactly what is being negotiated before these lands are transferred.
