Nor did Poincaré (in 1904!) fail to note that to take Russell’s effort seriously would open the possibility of reducing mathematics to mere computation (Leibniz’s dream!), and to ridicule the very idea: Thus it will be readily understood that in order l to demonstrate a theorem, it is not necessary or even useful to know what it means. . . . we might imagine a machine where we should put in axioms at one end and take out theorems at the other, like that legendary machine in Chicago where pigs go in alive and come out transformed into hams and sausages. It is no more necessary for the mathematician than it is l for these machines to know what he is doing.

So, CNN started selling time to direct marketers like Ginzu knives and Elvis commemorative plates before moving to the big ad spenders and mogul ad agencies, huh? It is interesting that this kind of marketing is the fastest and surest way to make money for the clients and for a starting media as well. (This info is in a great book by marketing pioneer and genius Ken McCarthy, by the way.)

Only three things matter in copywriting: 1. they start reading 2. they keep reading 3. they take the action you want them to. That's it.

David Foster Wallace didn’t have a TV set at home so that he would be able to write. He said that had he owned one, he would binge-watch TV all day. Ponder on that.

If social media were the culprit behind your lack of output and achievement, that would mean that 10, 15, or 20 years ago you were an unstoppable machine. Were you?

Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem—neat, plausible, and wrong. H. L. Mencken in a 1920 collection of essays called “Prejudices: Second Series”

To borrow a phrase from Mark Twain, the reports of email's death have been greatly exaggerated. People have been pronouncing email dead for a long time, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is especially true from a marketing standpoint, where businesses are selling mid- and high-ticket offers to email lists and thriving.

Since writing started in Sumer for accounting, it’s only right that Excel is still king. It’s our first necessity, and it dies hard.

Followers and clients may be in the same universe (media), but they have completely different intentions. Followers seek entertainment and free content; clients seek solutions and are ready to buy. Focusing on followers builds the top of the funnel (awareness), which is highly inefficient for a small business. Focusing on clients builds the bottom of the funnel (conversion), which brings immediate revenue. You can't pay expenses with popularity. Hope that helps.

Ads are not meant to win awards, earn praise from peers, please the client, or entertain the public. They are meant to sell. Even Ogilvy advised being inspired by direct marketing. Branding is expensive, and the big winners are the ad men. Selling is branding.

On the "Kill Your Darlings" Advice I have a take on this from the perspective of a copywriter, but I think it’s a valid point of view for whatever you write. Your 'darling' is the sentence or paragraph that you think is clever, but is actually a pure ego trip. It doesn’t enhance the offer, it doesn’t engage the reader, and it doesn’t sell.

Chris Dyson's posts and threads are pure, unalloyed gold and this is no exception. Listen to the man.
A real estate coach came to me with a ~$3K offer he couldn't sell. The offer was weak and his list of 2,400 leads had gone cold. 14 days later we closed €109K. Here's what most people get wrong about revenue

Giving things away for free is just as hard as selling them. I think that proves money usually isn't the problem. Instead, the issue lies within the other four elements of a sale that Zig Ziglar used to point out: "Every sale has five basic obstacles: no need, no money, no hurry, no desire, no trust."

In Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, a servant boy is punished whenever the young king misbehaves. Divine royalty cannot be touched. History repeats itself in Maranello. Ferrari’s new Luce EV is being savaged for looking like an Apple mouse, causing the stock to tumble 8%. But Sir Jony Ive and CEO Benedetto Vigna are corporate royalty. They are untouchable. So, the Chief Marketing Officer is suddenly out.
