World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize the essential work that humanitarian workers do. It’s also a time to stand up for their right to carry out their work safely, independently, impartially and without obstruction.
2025 was the second-deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers. At least 350 workers were killed in service, with 186 of these fatalities occurring in Gaza and 71 in Sudan. And as humanitarian workers face unprecedented risks, many civilians caught in conflict settings are being denied life-saving assistance.
This
#WorldHumanitarianDay, we reaffirm that civilians must always be protected and that international humanitarian law must be respected.
Alongside Cooperation Canada and our fellow Canadian humanitarian organizations, we call for sustained respect for and promotion of humanitarian principles, international humanitarian law, meaningful protection of civilians, and accountability for serious violations.
