The news has finally broke that @Shopify has acquired the Shop.com domain name! I learned about this deal several months ago at a very interesting cocktail party. While I was not involved in the transaction, and because nobody directly involved is my source, I am going to tell you something that is not being reported: The price was $100 Million!!! JUST the domain name. That is the state of the market ladies and gentlemen. YOUR DOMAIN = YOUR BRAND = THE LAST MOAT

There is always a .com you can get for $5k that's better the tryblurgh.‌ai you're currently using. The reason you don't see it is (a) lack of imagination and (b) because you're attached to Blurgh, which you shouldn't be, because it's not that great anyway.

At 9AM EST today somebody abused a bug in Payment Processor V2 to steal 10 Meebits, 50 Otherdeeds, 10 WoW, and 235 Desperate Apewives. It wasn't until over 12 hours later that somebody reported it to me, and upon digging in I realized that a great many NFTs were subject to the same exploit. I got in touch with the team over at LimitBreak and they quickly paused Payment Processor V3, which was subject to the same exploit. Unfortunately, V2 was not pausable, so the only path towards protecting affected assets was to run a whitehat operation. Similarly, V3 on ApeChain is temporarily in a state where it cannot be paused, so ApeChain assets approved to V3 needed to be saved as well. All in all, we rescued 23,155 NFTs worth north of $5.7M USD. We later discovered that a similar exploit could be used in reverse to steal WETH. 660 WETH was at risk, which we unfortunately were not fast enough to recover. Apologies to those affected. Shout out to @Boomskite for flagging the initial exploit tx to me, and @coffeedev @0xjustadev and @whiteoakkong for acting quickly and assisting with the recovery. All NFTs are safely relocated. Soon, owners will be able claim them back after revoking the exploitable approvals. Addresses to revoke below.

Getting the .com is the ultimate lock in Guess how much we spent on Fondo.com
A recent YC startup spent 250k on a domain. I was slightly shocked. But when I asked how much they raised after YC, the answer was 6.5m. So 1/26 of their round. This is the time we live in; one shocking number counterbalances the other.

We spent low seven figures on Atom.com in early 2024. We've already earned it back in lower CAC, plus growth in organic and paid channels. The bigger return was the one I couldn't put in a spreadsheet. It raised the ceiling on what people thought we could become. I'm biased, obviously. But most marketing stops working when you stop paying for it. A good domain doesn't.

Dana White says he refused to buy the UFC domain from User Friendly Computers for $20,000 and would end up paying nearly $200,000 “This guy owned User Friendly Computers, and this was my first big business mistake. So I called him up, and we wanted to buy the .com from him. I don’t remember the number, but he wanted something like $20,000, and I motherfucked him up and down. ‘You piece of shit. $20,000!’ He’s like, ‘Fuck you,’ and he hangs up the phone” “We battled for years, but the UFC just starts to go [up]. We ended up paying some crazy number, like $150,000 or $200,000, for the thing eventually, when I should have taken it for $20,000 in the beginning”

I believe that we may be entering the largest parabolic rise in domain name values in their entire history of existence. We have probably just entered the 3rd inning (of 9 innings for those who don't know baseball). There will be an ai bubble break, there will be company failures at scale, there will be rough patches of illiquidity... But if you look at ahead 5 years and probably 10 years, domain names are going to be the single most valuable asset on MOST companies balance sheets. I say that for 2 reasons: 1. The importance of your domain name will rise exponentially as trust and brand become the only distinguishing and competitive factors in most businesses, particularly consumer facing businesses. 2. Those companies that do NOT have a strong brand and comparable domain name will likely fail in those time horizons, giving way to survivorship bias. Thus MOST companies that still exist in 5-10 years will have extremely valuable domain names, and those will likely be their most valuable assets.
