Can the smoothness of a black hole horizon depend on information far from it? An IITGN researcher explores this question in a study of quantum gravity. Some calculations that include different shapes of spacetime produce separate “sectors.” Within each sector, information available far from a black hole may help explain why the black hole’s horizon is smooth. Across sectors, however, the way we identify a particle’s partner inside the horizon may change. One explanation of smoothness would then need information about which sector applies. The finding is conditional. If a complete theory of quantum gravity removes these sectors, this difficulty disappears. The study sharpens a question about what determines a smooth horizon. Technology can play an important role in improving how societies respond to public challenges. When informed by evidence and an understanding of people and their needs, it can help develop more effective approaches to governance. Building on this idea, IITGN launched the Policy Research and Analytics for Governance (PRAG) Initiative on August 11, 2026, as an interdisciplinary platform focused on addressing complex societal challenges through research, education and policy engagement. The event also featured a panel discussion with former government officials, academics and professionals on how technology institutes can contribute to public policy and governance through data-driven decision-making, grounded research, policy pilots and stronger government-academia collaboration. With a vision to foster a solution-oriented approach, PRAG focuses on understanding policy challenges in India and the Global South and translating research and expertise into practical interventions, including entrepreneurial solutions to market failures. Its mission includes supporting startups and public-academia partnerships, creating new courses and short programmes, and advancing evidence-informed policymaking through research, policy briefs, field studies and stakeholder consultations. As part of this approach, Prof Praharsh Patel and Mr Raj Kumar are also offering a course on “Real World Problem Solving”, encouraging students to develop solutions through challenge-based learning. Coordinated by Professor Patel and Prof Deepak Singhania, with support from affiliated faculty across IITGN, PRAG is planning an outreach event in October, followed by the Gandhinagar Policy Dialogues in 2027, alongside engaging stakeholders from governments to understand critical knowledge gap for building knowledge support systems. 🔬 𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 The Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar organised a seminar titled “Going from Lab to Market: Medical Diagnostics”, presented by Prof S. Pushpavanam, YBG Varma Chair Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras. The seminar explored how laboratory-based research can be translated into practical medical diagnostic technologies for healthcare applications. Prof Pushpavanam presented two research works from his laboratory: a rapid screening kit for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) for early detection of cervical cancer, and a microfluidic sensor for rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing (AST). The session highlighted approaches that can significantly reduce testing time, including HPV screening in less than an hour and antibiotic susceptibility testing in under six hours. IIT Gandhinagar Visits Taiwan at Invitation of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to Attract High-End Indian Talent Prof. Rajat Moona, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), is leading a delegation to Taiwan from 20-25 September at the invitation of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. In the presence of the Ministry, IITGN signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with National Central University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and National Taipei University of Technology to strengthen cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), advanced engineering, and other cutting-edge fields. Taiwan-India exchanges in higher education, Huayu education, and research have grown significantly over the past decade. In 2026, 974 Indian students pursued doctoral degrees in Taiwan, ranking second among all countries, after Indonesia with 1,081 students. Located in Gujarat, where the Indian government is actively developing a semiconductor ecosystem, IITGN plays an important role in semiconductor research, industry collaboration, and talent development. With support from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Government of Gujarat, IITGN established the Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH) and launched programs such as Integrated Circuit Design and Technology (ICDT) to cultivate advanced semiconductor talent. Through this visit, Taiwan and India aim to leverage Taiwan’s strengths in higher education and its semiconductor industry ecosystem to attract high-caliber Indian talent in AI, semiconductors, and advanced technology design, while strengthening partnerships in talent development. The delegation will visit leading Taiwanese universities, including National Cheng Kung University, and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Taipei University of Technology, National Central University, as well as the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Center and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC).
