My latest for Rappler: In a university so strictly guarded that even an 81-year-old professor has to prove his bona fides every time he enters a building— how could management suddenly turn vague about oversight? rappler.com/voices/thought-l…

MARCOLETA PLEADS NOT GUILTY Sen. Rodante Marcoleta is seen wearing the yellow BJMP shirt as he pleads not guilty to both charges of plunder and violation of Presidential Decree 46 during a hearing at the Sandiganbayan's Third Division on Wednesday. The court granted the request of Marcoleta's lawyers to withdraw their motion to quash the plunder charge, thus his arraignment proceeded. Marcoleta's co-accused Joseph Espiritu also entered his not guilty plea for the case of violating Presidential Decree 46, which prohibits the giving and receiving of gifts by public officials and private individuals. | via @ghio_ong

'[IT] IS NOT A RHETORICAL DEVICE TO SANITIZE CORRUPTION.'

I don’t like Alan Peter Cayetano. That’s an understatement. Having said that, Erwin Tulfo has no business peddling pseudo diagnoses of mental health problems. Pwede namang issue per issue. Stereotyping by any side, against any side, is never ok. (More)

Stereotyping is lazy; at worst, an attempt to dodge issues. Also a favorite tactic of autocrats, remember? Journalists should rein in news subjects or (politely) call them out. Huwag sanayin. This is not the first time something like this has happened in news interviews. (More)

Pretty sure some will grumble: OA, kill joy; Cayetano deserves that. Slippery slope, eh. We can’t get mad when this happens to people we like but shrug it off when it happens to folks we detest. An old cycle we need to break.

Huh. Ilabas ang listahan ng mga projects destructive to the environment given a green light by DENR or the govt in general.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Monday brushed aside concerns that the proposed Philippines-United States Pax Silica project could worsen water supply in host communities, saying no major industrial project would be approved without a sustainable water management system. “Totoo naman ’yun. Totoo talaga in any manufacturing concern, pero may sources of water naman. In any properly planned industrial estate, nandun na ’yung source of water,” Teodoro told reporters at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City. According to the defense chief, the greater concern should not be water consumption itself but how water is managed. | via @biancadava

Chief of staff Susie Wiles, President Donald Trump's closest aide, and FBI Director Kash Patel helped personally orchestrate a sprawling investigation last week at the White House aimed at determining who in the government leaked information about the security deficiencies of a Qatari-gifted airplane meant to be used as Air Force One – with some officials being asked to turn over their phones to investigators on White House grounds, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. cnn.it/4wFjxs9

Ooooh! Sweet, swift turn there. At tama naman. Lawyers have no business hurling death threats.
Statement I accept the wisdom of the Supreme Court to suspend me for one year. All lawyers are under the disciplinary power of the Court and I am no exception. Back in 2018 to 2019, I was fighting for the life and liberty of my brother. And my family’s safety and reputation. I felt helpless and powerless except for my small voice on social media. We were nobodies and I was screaming against the void. If being suspended is the price I have to pay for defending my family, then it is a price I will pay in any lifetime. I recognize that words, contained in a tweet, have power and my choice of words should have consequences. All lawyers should be held accountable for their words and actions. That is why I prostrate myself to the Supreme Court for disciplining me and in the same vein, I beg the Honorable Court to resolve the pending disbarment cases of former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte, to show that indeed, no one is above the law. And to our dear Senator-Judges, if a lawyer like me can be suspended for cursing, then a Vice President like Sara Duterte should likewise be answerable not just for cursing but for threatening the life of the President and the First Lady. Accountability should apply to all, big or small. #Accountability

He’s nearing 40 and acts like a juvenile delinquent. But so do the older sibs. Violently dangerous juvenile delinquents.
