Yes.
Today feels like a good day to remind people in the film industry to not surround yourself with negativity. This career is already hard enough. I am very aware you can't "out-manifest" a bad situation BUT I also know misery loves company and misery gets clicks. I was just at a film festival with thousands of film lovers and filmmakers. It was magnetic. I talked to some many writers, producers, directors, and actors who are MAKING SHIT HAPPEN. You can choose to doom scroll or listen to "what happens when the industry dies" podcasts, or you can surround yourself with people who are kicking the door down. Choose what you consume wisely because it will be what you become.

Publicly traded companies are inappropriate entities to take the kind of risk that real filmmaking requires.
Do you think the Warner Bros/Paramount merger is good for the future of cinema?

Interesting definition of "independent film" in the Paramount antitrust settlement. Tenet is now an indie movie

Movies are terrible because there is no free market for films. It is a command and control “economy”. Executives of publicly traded companies, politicians, and lawyers are not good filmmakers. Stop paying for propaganda.
JUST IN: Paramount reportedly agrees to financial penalties if it fails to release 30 films annually in theaters as part of a settlement with states opposing its Warner Bros. merger.

If you find yourself wondering why movies suck and "Hollywood" has imploded, you need look no further than the incentive system currently in place. "Filmmakers" are now little more than hired labor in a sweatshop pumping out "premium content", whatever that means. It doesn't have to be this way. You don't have to be propagandized. But, how can you tell whether you're watching art or propaganda? That's easy, just find out who's writing the checks. What's worse, is that in this situation , you're paying the Saudis for the privilege. Don't pay the Saudis, pay the Filmmakers. Don't watch content, watch movies. variety.com/2026/film/news/f…

Filmmakers are doing something separate from podcasters (conversationalists), instructional videos (subject matter experts), advertisements (influencers in various capacities), streamers (video games, etc), journalists, educators, and so on. Films are a different medium. Content creation is a catch all for someone producing digital media in general, but they are vastly different disciplines.

While this article touches on many great points about the downfall of Hollywood, most, if not all, of the points are symptoms of a deeper issue plaguing the industry. The greatest problem plaguing Hollywood at the moment is its incentive system. The industry used to adhere to a more natural incentive structure. Prior to the rise of Netflix (streaming) it was more of a unit sales based business & filmmakers had a stake in the success of a project. If you cranked out a banger you got paid. If you squeezed out a flop you were punished. The market responded according to the audience's response. Now artists are essentially hired guns who take a fee upfront with far less riding on the success or quality of their work. Streamers became the buyers instead of audiences at large. Streaming has fundamentally changed the incentive system such that you are paying the company regardless of the quality of work. Streaming companies decide, more or less via command and control economics, how to allocate your mindlessly paid subscription. There is less incentive to create great work anymore and the industry is collapsing into an unnatural incentive scheme. VHS and DVD had a telecine from a 35mm film print. It was a different process that was mastered for CRT TVs. Neither method is necessarily the correct look. It’s a subjective process.
The Disney renaissance movies used to look different. They were planned to be printed on 35 mm film -- that's how they were first released. Modern editions skip that last step in the process. It was a highly developed, overlooked craft, as we explore: ─➤animationobsessive.substack.…

For independent filmmakers you can add a fellow cast or crew member onto your cap table and allocate residuals directly to them, paid out per second, as audiences are watching your film. Check us out indeehub.studio/register We're still in early beta, but payments and playback are live.
AWFUL advice. Once you promise someone a contractual percentage youve created an ongoing legal obligation. And if you accidentally miscalculate, youve created a potential legal dispute (which is bound to happen as most have zero infrastructure for accounting/tracking/statements)

Capstone, the company that financed ‘OBSESSION’, is estimated to make $45M - $50M from the film after its success. They will share this with the creative team, including director Curry Barker. (Source: thewrap.com/creative-content…)
