Very exciting things going on in my local area of London. See the below story from @conalu about the Chiswick-based company that is planning to revolutionise nuclear power by mounting reactors on barges and directing them to where the need is greatest. As he notes, Core Power has just signed an agreement with the United States Marine Administration to accelerate the construction of a future fleet of U.S.-flagged nuclear-powered merchant ships. The company says it is targeting first construction in the US in 2028. 👇 theviewfromw5.substack.com/p…?

This is the Forest City of new nuclear. The biggest problem is that maintenance becomes much more expensive. You don't want corrosive salt water anywhere near the cooling pipes or any IT equipment. They also need much more power than the ship can provide. And a reliable data   connection. And computers don't like rocking about - so no storms. People who don’t understand the engineering behind either computers or reactors are attracted to this - which is almost all policy wonks. EAs are very excited about it too, because they have fetishised regulation to the point of psychosis, where evading a regulation has become an end in itself.

Who builds the reactors and who builds the barges? Barges, that's where I want to be.

And what do you think you'll solve with a few small floating reactors? Ignorance—especially regarding science and technology—is no blessing.
