A reality check on the current “war with Russia is about to start” frenzy. Russia is aggressive. It is waging a major war in Ukraine, conducting sabotage and other terror operations in Europe and yes, is testing NATO's red lines Russia probably wants us to believe so - but there is no new intelligence assessment saying Russia is about to attack NATO. There is quite a difference between THREAT and IMMINENT WAR. We should be able to understand both at the same time. So where did the current panic come from? European politicians and media created a perfect storm, (likely with the help of Russian assets) making deliberately strong statements, often for domestic political reasons. Russian intimidation and hybrid warfare is designed to frighten, divide and pacify Europe. Media/sm logic turns “NATO has plans for every contingency” into “NATO expects war any day now.” The NATO Military Committee chairman said the Alliance has 4,000 pages of plans covering everything from minor incidents to Article 5. That means NATO is doing its job. Not that war starts Tuesday. Governments need parliamentary support for defence, Ukraine aid and larger EU/NATO budgets. Russia is a real threat, so politicians are not inventing the danger. But there is an obvious temptation to use the most dramatic formulations available. Everyone exaggerates. Then Moscow adds more provocations and threats to the mix. And headlines strip away qualifications. Then algorithms reward the most frightening interpretation. Within minutes preparedness becomes prediction. Estonia’s intelligence assessment remains the same: Russia is dangerous and its military capabilities may grow, but we don't see that Russia intends to attack Estonia or another NATO country in the coming months. Believe me - we are watching very closely, literally. And we will not keep it to ourselves if we see something. We prepare. All of Europe needs to stop panicking and continue doing the same, seriously and calmly. And increase serious military aid to Ukraine. This is what the fight is about today. To make us wobble. Don't. Russia wants us uncertain, divided and sacred. Deterrence requires the opposite: strong defence, clear eyes and steady nerves. The one who stays calm wins the fight.

Estonian Intelligence now says Russia responsible for the August 15th arson attack in the country.

Estonia’s attribution of an arson attack orchestrated by Russia against a defence company is extremely serious. Sweden stands fully behind Estonia and I am in close touch with PM Kristen Michal. This pattern of attacks is directed against Europe as a whole. The aim is to weaken our support for Ukraine and to intimidate us. It will not work. Together, we will increase support for Ukraine and take further measures against Russia, while continuing to strengthen our preparedness and resilience.

Russian forces have shown a level of brutality that is hard to comprehend. In this interview, a captured combat medic describes how they were trained. Ukrainian prisoners, whom he referred to as “terrorists,” were brought in and deliberately mutilated so the trainees could then learn how to treat their injuries. He describes one case in which an explosive charge was strapped to a Ukrainian prisoner’s leg and detonated, blowing the leg off. The instructors then returned and demonstrated how to treat an injury like that. After that, the instructors showed them how to “finish them off” - with a knife to the heart...

Look, this is blatant platform manipulation and violation of Terms of Service. Why is X so bad at detecting it? There was a real effort to fight bots and manipulation before @nikitabier left, but now it looks as if this shit is simply allowed. Maybe it’s by design.

Based on the information collected by the Estonian Internal Security Service @kaitsepolitsei we can conclude with certainty that the arson attack on Milrem Robotics premises that took place on the night of 14–15 august in Tallinn was an act of sabotage ordered by the special services of the Russian Federation. Such actions are absolutely unacceptable. In response, the @MFAestonia will today summon Russia’s Chargé d’affaires. The perpetrators have been apprehended and no longer pose a threat to our national security. Estonia is a difficult environment for Russia to carry out such actions because we act decisively and swiftly to protect our state. This act of sabotage is part of Russia’s broader campaign across Europe, aimed at intimidating us and weakening our support for Ukraine. Our response will be the opposite. We will increase both our support for Ukraine and the pressure on Russia to end its aggression. Let’s not lose focus and stay the course, because Russia’s actions are a clear indication that our collective exertion of pressure is working.

On September 28 1939, the Soviets and the Nazis issued a joint statement announcing that their bloody conquest and partitioning of Poland between them (“have, by the means of the treaty signed today, definitively settled the problems arising from the collapse of the Polish state”) has “created a sure foundation for a lasting peace in Eastern Europe” [1]. The fraction that approves of the signing of the pact has increased over time: 45% in 2017 and 65% in 2025, with only 8% condemning it [5, 6]. This has gone along with the rehabilitation of Stalin, whom 56% of Russians now consider a great leader, up from 28% in 2016 [7]. 79% did not know or could not say whether the Nazis and the Soviets held a joint parade in Brest [3]. If you ask them what happened on September 17, 1939, only 11% name the secret partitioning of Poland [6]. What is especially remarkable is how similar the Russian tactics are today. Invade a neighboring country under the pretext of saving its population, demand that everyone accepts its occupation as fact, and claim that those who refuse to do so are warmongers interested in prolonging the war.
