Scientific proof of probably the #1 mentality we try to instill in our students: believing struggle is natural and an important part of growth and development. To me, this study is an extension of a book we ask all of our students to read, "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl.
Believing difficulties build character is linked to higher self-esteem and meaning in life. Struggle can be training, not just damage.

Somewhat ironically, one of my biggest struggles with clients (or their parents!) is about struggle itself. When students start encountering struggle, some parents think that means the mentor or educator is not "doing their job." But high school-level struggles are a great and really safe way to build the resilience needed for the real world. I question the assumption parents can or should protect their kids from struggle forever.

Capitalism and struggle can be polar opposites. Customers don't want to pay for struggle, and most times they shouldn't. But education is different. To focus on genuine development, students and parents have to embrace the right kind of struggle.

The best people to correct for this mismatch of incentives are parents and other family members. Second best are schools, churches, community centers.
