Eruvim are anti-assimilation. Easier to go to a Jewish day care if that's what is nearby. Easier to hit a shiva if mourners live a block over. Easier to get invited to Shabbos dinner, blah, blah, blah. Jews of all denominations would benefit from taking them more seriously.

I get so geeked for eruvim, and I drive on Shabbos, so carrying isn't a concern for me. As someone who doesn't live in Manhattan, I'm more concerned with the community aspect.

Writing this @eJPhil tribute about @OrthodoxUnion's Rabbi Hauer was a moving experience. Grateful for our final conversation 2 weeks ago. The rabbi had a magical ability to discuss difficult subjects with such empathy that I valued and fail to do myself.
