LOCK HIM UP: A Florida man is accused of starving his dog to nearly HALF his expected weight, leaving him covered in open sores and fighting untreated infections. His plan was to surrender Tanner “next week.” Now he faces FELONY ANIMAL CRUELTY charges and reportedly posted his $3,500 bond within hours. Johnathan Meyers, 31, of Oak Hill, was arrested Sept. 29, 2026, following an investigation into the Catahoula mix’s condition. Volusia County Animal Services discovered Tanner during a routine stray-dog call on Halbrook Road. He weighed just over 33 pounds, compared with the approximately 60 pounds expected for a dog his size. A forensic veterinary examination gave him a body-condition score of 1 OUT OF 9, the lowest rating on the scale. The arrest affidavit described severe dehydration, weakness and multiple untreated infections. Meyers approached officers and identified himself as Tanner’s owner. He acknowledged he could not adequately care for him and signed him over that day. Animal Services took Tanner to the shelter for emergency treatment.⠀ Detectives reviewed veterinary records and interviews and said the evidence showed prolonged neglect rather than a one-day lapse. During the arrest, a deputy told Meyers, “That dog has been in the custody of animal control for a month and it’s gained almost 15 pounds.” Meyers denied neglecting Tanner and asked, “Can you call my mom?” Deputies also reported finding a glass pipe in his pocket with residue that field-tested presumptively positive for methamphetamine. He was additionally charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer without violence. Tanner now weighs more than 49 pounds, and his infections have improved. I leave you with two pups under NYCACC Kill Command…the municipal pound in NYC who kills healthy adoptable pups (and cats) every day…the City that never sleeps..the Capital of strays….This outfit considers itself to be a “No Kill” pound and is touted by Best Friends but the naked truth is that NYCACC operates like an old fashioned Victorian era Kill Pound. I just learned that they killed 68 dogs in August of which 46% were “Silent Kills.” A Silent Kill is a dog who arrived stray…they spend a bit of time in the pound, are issued an 🆔 but beyond that, not much more…sometimes the dog’s sex isn’t listed and most are not given a name. (Considering some of the nasty, inappropriate, condescending, degrading names they do assign, it’s probably best that they’re unnamed.) So these stays or lost dogs are given a few days of impoundment then they’re killed. They’re not put on the At Risk To Be Killed list so advocates can share them, and sometimes, they’re immediately placed on the Kill Command List (most ominous dangerous list to be on) and are killed immediately. So they’re basically killing over half of the incoming pups. The 46% of Silent Kills and the ones they kill under the At Risk TBK and the Kill Commands. All this killing coming from an outfit who claims a “No Kill” status. Every month a letter is sent out stating that “no healthy dogs are killed.” More rubbish. They kill healthy dogs every day…. But now, let’s get back to these two beautiful pups on the Kill Command List: Oakley Kazooie & Gray. They exude sorrow and grief…it pours out of them onto your smartphone or desktop…it’s real and true. These pups don’t lie. If you follow the NYCACC pups you know the staff’s tactics…these two pups have pictures only taken from inside their kennels…they have no videos or pictures in the play yard…they’re both awaiting death by the hands of the unkind…. Oakley Kazooie & Gray could be dead tomorrow…they need a foster or an adopter through a rescue. If that doesn’t happen I’ll be writing their obituary tomorrow….
