I think of this letter every Memorial Day. I can’t imagine the worry and grief of this woman, who had yet to learn that her five sons had all died at Guadalcanal two months earlier.

Haven’t been there in over 20 years. Wife has never been. So we’d planned a visit next month during a trip to the UK.
Giving up on it for now. Maybe we’ll try again in the future, once these depressingly nonsensical desecrations are removed and sanity is restored.
The Church of England decided this week to cover the interior of the oldest cathedral in England in graffiti in order to represent the voices of “marginalised communities.”
The Very Rev David Monteith, Dean of Canterbury, said: “There is a rawness which is magnified by the graffiti style, which is disruptive. It is unfiltered and not sanitised.”
“This exhibition intentionally builds bridges between cultures, styles and genres and allows us to receive the gifts of younger people who have much to say.”
It’s actually stunning how much the elite of Britain hate their own culture and civilisation.
You couldn’t even invent this as satire.
They are literally scrawling graffiti on the walls of ancient cathedrals. Everything beautiful is just torn down and destroyed.

Just made a road trip reservation at a @HamptonByHilton and saw this in my confirmation msg:
“in accordance with CDC guidelines, we are requiring face coverings in all indoor public areas of all our hotels throughout the U.S. for guests and Team Members”
Huh?

Among the joys of the SF Bay Area are the @SFSymphony @SFOpera and the @SFConservMusic . This is the BART stop I use to get to their wonderful performances.
🎥🧟Yesterday was a jam-packed day full of 🔫 violence in SF, so in the evening, I ventured to the Sunset to decompress and unwind. Upon my return to my hood, I had to exit Civic Center Station, and holy fettyccini, it felt like I was back in London Breed's 2022 all over again!

This is so true—of every person I’ve ever known who had a tendency toward violence.
"You do not have to give people reasons to be violent, because they already have plenty of reasons. All you have to do is take away their reasons to restrain themselves. Evil is always ready and waiting to burst into the world." robkhenderson.com/p/unmaskin…

For Memorial Day:
A haunting letter written in 1942 to the Navy by a woman from my hometown, asking if her 5 sons were still alive. (They had died in the sinking of the USS Juneau on November 13 at Guadalcanal.)
An unimaginable sacrifice.

Are the members of our brilliant class living in a post punctuation world?
the last couple of GPT-4o updates have made the personality too sycophant-y and annoying (even though there are some very good parts of it), and we are working on fixes asap, some today and some this week.
at some point will share our learnings from this, it's been interesting.

Is @easyJet aware how many ppl can’t book on their website or app? At payment stage of booking, it now says I’m not “authorized” and should book “directly” with easyJet. Then get directed to partner sites—for travel agents! See TripAdvisor thread for complaints since Jan 2024.

Imagine if we did this in the US—allowing choice, instead of assigning kids to failing schools based solely on their address.
How Admissions to secondary schools work: THREAD 👇🏼
You have 5 or 6 choices. Put the school you want first. The LA will do their best to get you your highest choice school.
Schools will have lottery or distance as criteria. Distance means the closest to the school get in. 1/6

I’d rather have my taxes go to direct tuition grants for Ss who need it, rather than for pretend loans to young ppl with unknown degrees & earning power, using pretend govt f’casts of future revenue and repmts, while tormenting Ss for years about the exact amounts of their debt.

American Hustle: Mike Solana is hilarious, but fundamentally, he does understand the American tradition of “spend a sh*t ton of money and hope for the best”. piratewires.com/p/american-h…

More public debate and transparency around the power that accrediting bodies have over higher ed and K12–public and private—could be enormously beneficial for education in the US.
Precisely because you’ve never heard of it, the DeSantis–Biden clash over university accreditation shows who DeSantis really is. | Opinion by Stanley Kurtz
