Apparently I’m now classified as a domestic luxury item. “WHO THE F*** WIRED THIS?!” is shouted at least once a month in the Konrad household. And I also restore luxury yachts. So, honestly, the classification checks out. 😜

Amen! No luxury yacht work for me, but doing projects for family is my love language.

Two things, ma’am: 1) there is in fact a service fee… 2) there is a non-zero chance that the person I am cursing who wired it last time… is me.

If the women don't find you handsome, They should at least find you handy.

I have tremors and am trying to rebuild a 1947 RCA radio using previous skills. I will be amazed if I get this thing working again but I shouldn't be. I have the training and experience however my brain is failing. I am the only one on X admitting I have brain damage.

Good luck with that! I have about a 50% success rate with radio gear that vintage

This is just the type of positive spin that this world needs right now. Totally undervalued assets.

Having redone 3 houses and now building a duplex, it's often taken for granted how nice it is to know how to do everything from plumbing and electrical, to framing, roofing and siding. Mechanical aptitude is the highest bang for your buck life skill.

There's a price to pay for being handy and driven. -Wife says, "I'd like to have chickens!" I say, "Say no more!" 10 days later, I have built a coop. The coop is 18 by 12, with ventilation, heat, automatic feeding/watering systems, 12 nesting boxes, and enough roosting bars to comfortably house over 50 chickens. I even built an animal-proof storage room on the back side for bedding, feed, and equipment. (Chicken math took over, and the storage room was incorporated to double the coop floor and roost bar space. Wife says, "I only wanted a few chickens, not a contract with Egglands best!"

I currently have a series of clamps holding something or other perfectly straight on my longest kitchen counter as it dries. I don't even know what he's concocting. but I know it will improve my life. 🤣

I love her posts! I'm not a handy as her husband is, but I do ok and my wife appreciates me. I couldn't afford to pay someone to have done much of the work restoring our old house. Sometimes discretion is the better part of value though. 😉

My brothers torpedoed most of my dates quickly. The one I married can wire an outlet, do basic plumbing, change summer/winter tires, build decks, fix drywall, fix & build engines, put you to sleep and do surgery/ sutures and play Chopin, Beethoven, etc. on the piano. I won!🏆

That's a good post. Unfortunately, I was cursed with competence and know that I have the ability to fix just about everything around the house. This hurts my judgment about when it's appropriate to hire someone who is current in a particular trade or get myself up to speed and do the job.

For some inexplicable reason, my house has the breaker panel at the top of a three-story stairwell. My tallest ladder will not reach it. "Who the f*** wired this" indeed. 😑

i just uttered that phrase a few days ago. So I'm trying to install a dimmer in a single pole light switch. There should be: Black (hot), Red (second hot), Green (ground). Instead, I see Black, Red, right next to the red, second black, and ground. My brother is a retired IBEW worker, doesn't know WTF that second black wire is, no diagram that came with the dimmer mentions it, no Google or AI search reveals anything, and no YT video gets me there either. Now I'm left with the indignity of hiring an electrician to install a dimmer. So: Who TF wired this?

I had a summer job about 2 decades plus ago installing and servicing hot tubs and spas. 99% of the service calls were about faulty heating done by the previous guy. I was the one repeating those exact same words. I can honestly say I can swear in several languages.

Hmm. I've always just thought of myself as a creative and determined cheapskate who understands how stuff works. It never occurred to me that my criticism of the professionals who gave me something to do later would be considered valuable to others. 🤠
