Here's my dating advice for men: Marry a woman who needs to be a slut for you. Everything else can be negotiated. She can always get hotter. She can find religion. She can improve her cooking skills. She can work on her interpersonal relationships. You can get her a therapist. You can get her a doctor. You can get her braces. You can send her back to college. Sorry to state the obvious, but if someone has to hand you power, they have more power than you do.
There’s something objectively hilarious about arguing that women are uniquely qualified to run the world while constructing a hypothetical in which the people currently running it have to suspend the normal mechanisms by which humans acquire power and simply “put” women in charge.
If women were categorically better at acquiring, wielding, and maintaining power, we wouldn’t need a two-year global Make-A-Wish program where someone hands us the keys to civilization to prove it.
We’d have the fucking keys.

The San Francisco housing market is about to become the biggest K-shaped economy of all time.
Several hundred billion dollars of liquidity is about to enter the market as Anthropic and OpenAI IPO, employees sell stock, and VCs start collecting carry.
Thousands of cash-rich buyers will make all-cash offers on houses and rapidly bid up prices. Every listing in the supply-constrained market will be a financial knife fight between people with $20-500 million sitting in Robinhood accounts.
Meanwhile, ordinary buyers (“ordinary buyers” in the sense that they make $600k at Google or Meta and have seven figures liquid instead of eight or nine) are going to get hit with a double-whammy of rising prices plus 7% mortgage rates. No matter how much above-listing they offer, how strong their credit is, how many contingencies they waive, their bids will get blown out of the water by people who joined Anthropic before the series C raise and have more digits in their bank account than they know what to do with. For all intents and purposes, they will be locked out of the local housing market for at least five years.
Great time to be a seller. Great time to be a real estate broker. Great time to be an engineer at OpenAI.
Terrible time to be anyone else in the Bay Area permanent underclass, though.

The funnier thing is thinking that being a NYT Reporter is the ultimate solver of problems in our society. If she stays in a Holiday Inn Express she would be unstoppable.
There are layers to how funny this is.
First layer: How ridiculous it is to think that any one person can simply fix any problem immediately.
But the funniest part? The assumed respect everybody would obviously have for the mighty NYT reporter.

We have a lot of talk of "best practices" with no actual definition of what those are. The assumption is that they're not doing them. Are we back to failing kids?
To adopt best practices in reading and math instruction and school discipline, for starters. Merit pay for the best teachers and making it easier to fire the worst teachers would be good too.

No one wants those kids to have a bad education but unless you've worked with children you don't realize there are just kids that aren't worth your time. You don't want to invest in kids who are actively fighting your help. You don't want to have to solve EVERY problem.
I think the issue I have with all your takes on the Nicole Hannah Jones article is how all of you have so much outrage on behalf of a rich kid who will be fine.
And so little empathy that a lot of kids in that school won’t have this out.
Like I don’t care if NHJ is a bit of a negligent type B mom. But all of you acting like other kids in that school don’t also deserve better education is just weird to me.

The funniest part that only a few people have touched on is that NHJ was a bad parent. She called every day and never checked the work. She thought her child was smart and doing well when she clearly wasn't. Even her child was like you're not a good parent.
It’s good to keep in mind that Nicole Hannah Jones is a progressive.
And Progressives *always* think every single issue is a lack of resources.
They never think that the lack of resources is due to cultural deficits or dysfunction.
For example, they never think that the lack of parental involvement in a child’s schooling is due to a difference in values, it’s always due to “systemic issues”
And that if you have an entire school filled with kids whose parents don’t care, collectively, the school system itself is going to respond in kind.
The only way teachers get away with not assigning homework, not grading things, is if the parents are literally not paying attention.
Same with the lunch room situation. Kids should’ve been taught not to throw stuff and run around the lunch room like crazy *at home*
So you have an entire school predicated on parents not paying attention and you think “well if I just give more money that’ll fix it.”
It’s not going to work.
But this is the constant pattern with progressivism they think “money money money” will fix EVERYTHING.
“Give me more taxes that’ll fix it.”
“I’ll yell at people that’ll fix it.”
It doesn’t fix it.
Because the baseline premise is wrong. People create the system, the system doesn’t create the people.

While this is true it is literally impossible to get people to care or things to change when the primary stakeholders don’t. The parents, NHJ included, didn’t care there kids weren’t learning - NHJ felt her child had a local maximum and liked that
Can everyone stop dunking on NHJ, long enough to see that while, yes, she obviously should have done what's best for her daughter, it's also true that school was not serving any of the families that sent their kids. It's like this in many more places than you probably realize.
The system has failed & needs a complete reset. A reset that people like NHJ really aren't going to like, even after this recent reevaluation.

A major issue with education discourse is we use generic words for specific concepts everyone defines differently. "Basic skills" is a great example of this. What does "Basic" mean? "Students who need more support" is equally broad - why the need more support is important.
Trades come after basic skills.
The career tech ed is so much better know. It is both trades and academics.
This is different than alternative schools for teens who need extra support / had dropped out etc

This can be true but it's still kudos to her for writing this. This is probably one of the most honest accounts of education from someone of her experience as both a mother and advocate. The discussion has been fantastic - this is a positive step.
I see a lot of people saying "Good for her" to NHJ for writing this piece
I am disinclined to this position. NHJ's life work (the 1619 project) made American education worse. Her educational policies made the world worse. There are lot of people she's harmed who aren't her daughter & will never get an apology or a retraction.

There are a lot of kids we should give up on in certain areas. We do need a much more broader education system but some kids can become much more specialized in trades, music, or sports which should then be their primary education.
I don't want the public school system to give up on students who persistently render others unable to learn by misbehaving—I want a system that removes them from normal classrooms and puts them in special settings with teachers specially trained to meet their distinct needs
