Mélenchon has a record of positions favourable to Moscow: he defended Russia’s annexation of Crimea and opposed the European sanctions imposed in response. That gives substance to criticism of his stance on Russia. The stronger criticism is that, despite condemning the invasion, he advocates restrictions that would limit Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and strike the forces attacking it.
