There’s a bug in the simulation. Here’s why. This morning around 7am the smoke detector that can only be reached by a tall ladder started beeping loudly because it wanted new batteries. Problem is, up until now this ALWAYS happened at 2am no matter which, no matter where. Even when staying at my brother’s place. Hotels, etc. Scary.

Always fun to have unexpected visitors, especially when one is a bear. You never need to prepare food or anything.

Just spent a half hour trying to update the payment type of a subscription. This was needed because someone tried a $3.15 purchase on a Saturday that was flagged by fraud services. Fraud services locks the card and texts you over the three bucks. Until you reply, nothing goes through. If you say it wasn’t you, they kill the card and you need to contact your bank (which being a junior achievement bunch are closed on weekends, phone support included) then wait for them to send you a replacement. Days, weeks. So you say yes to unlock the card and eat the three bucks (which was already declined so you aren’t even charged that). Meanwhile depending, you get bunches of emails from vendors saying your repeating purchase was declined and what kind of fucking crook are you? Also no local purchases like food and petrol. For the next six months you have to bit by bit clean this all up and meanwhile someone else does a $2.96 and around you go again. Which brings us back to the original topic. You get an email. You go to the vendor’s website. It asks for passwords. It sends authentication codes on your email or text to the device you aren’t on. You get past that and it wants a changed password, rejecting each for some picayune reason. Try all this for 100 accounts each time around. I moved banks figuring the effort was about the same and moved as many repeating transactions to PayPal separating card numbers from vendors. Point of this is everything is getting harder and harder to use and it’s nearing the point where all commerce ceases. Good luck with that.

@cvspharmacy CVS has recently installed a system where customers have to enter their name, DOB, and phone number to pick up a subscription. This is a poorly designed, poorly thought out piece of crap putting a large part of an employee’s job on the patron. It failed for me, it failed for my wife, for others while we were there. The only way to “improve my experience” would be to remove these and pray for forgiveness. Why the pharmacy employees haven’t all quit in frustration eludes me. Haven’t you tortured them enough? These overly expensive useless attempts at showing off use of tech have to be the result of kickbacks and corruption. Nobody who went near one would have approved these. I give CVS a year. They’ll be gone just like Rite Aid and Walgreens.

Posting a comment worth sharing… I’ve noted of late, especially in the medical industry, implementation of “patient facing” automated so called (I hesitate to use the term) artificial intelligence has made the patient-doctor-insurance-staff communication appreciably worse. It has made every interaction fail for some unnecessarily, unrelated to care, reason or another. Things lost. Things not tracked. Procedural changes not communicated to all relevant parties. Limited choices of reason for contact. Excessive reminders. Excessive requests for review. It’s all at or near the breaking point which brings me to your article. Older tech workers, if we live long enough, will be the only ones with any chance of straightening this all out. And if anyone cares.

Purely coincidentally (nothing serious at all) I thought I’d catch up on neglected postponed checkups for vision, dental, medical things. Five for me. A couple more for the wife. Every one, EVERY ONE got balled up for one reason or another and straightening them out was nearly impossible. Every one was A didn’t send something to B, C requires something from D first, E sent approval to E instead of F and on and on. And on. Lost paperwork. Missing paperwork. Changed paperwork. Five separate practices have ten different online portals. None intemperate. Sone crash, lose data, hang. User interfaces laughable. Every phone tree starts off with “if you’re having a medical emergency hang up (?) and dial (??) 911. Suggest having 911 dialed on a second phone because you’re going to stroke out before finished with the first call.

Sent to friend. Copied here… Attempt to buy online: 1. Log on 2. Forget password. 3. Link sent via email assuming my email is everywhere I go. 4. Link to change password. 5. Loop of invalid format / same as the one you forgot. Similar to. As passwords should be one way encrypted how do it know? 6. Log on again. 7. Enter 100 digit code within 2 minutes sent to device you don’t have with you. 8. Finally put purchase in cart 9. Check out. Saved card expired. Can’t update must delete and reenter all info over. 10. Another 100 digit authentication. 11. If using PayPal repeat above steps to get through that. 12. Shipping type not used in your area. Choose another. 13. Purchase confirmation text and email. If lucky or out of stock delivery estimate in years product substituted for unacceptable one. 14. Request to fill out shopping survey. 15. Request to review purchase not received yet. 16. Purchase delivered to neighbor or canal. 17. Replacement wrong size. To return restart at step one. 18. Receive infinite emails promoting other crap they sell that you might “like.” Too long and sad to be funny but true.

Dropped off a car for warranty (we shall see) maintenance. The person ahead of me was complaining about the dealership’s AI based phone tree. Customer rep said everyone’s complaining. Foisted on them by headquarters. Saw this article this morning: theepochtimes.com/article/af… basically saying AI apps are more expensive than people and are buggy, incomplete, and awful. I agree. Seems to me there are two business AI apps. One chases customers away and the other ruins their websites attempting to gain customers. Could do without them both.

On America’s 200th anniversary we were invited to sit on a friend’s 17th floor and watch the fireworks on the Hudson. One of the most enjoyable days of our lives. 50 years ago. Fuck.

Jeremy Clarkson, in the last episode of his Clarkson’s Farm series, announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and that he had a successful operation to remove the cancerous parts. Subsequently in an interview about a month ago he said he is doing fine. The “problem” is, that streamed episode was recorded about nine months ago. So this announcement wasn’t news, at least not timely news. Nevertheless, the press and media immediately ran stories of Jeremy’s impending demise, fans sent messages of sympathy, even Piers Morgan weighed in saying he spoke with Clarkson last Christmas. My opinion is that this again reflects negatively on the media, promoting something as current and critical when, given what little we and they actually know. Tempest in a teapot perhaps but it again reflects negatively on what we punters think is news and newsworthy. PS Juat about every male over 70-ish has or is going to have prostate issues. There is a blood draw test (PSA) that helps to diagnose potential problems so insurance tells doctors to not do this test for patients over 70. What’s that about?

Reply to posts essentially saying over tip because staff doesn’t work for free or don’t eat here… Agreed but nor is it your customer’s job to pay your salary. We pay for the food, drink, table, and ambiance. We OPTIONALLY tip based on the waitperson’s skill and appropriate attention. The tip should go exclusively to those servers attending our table, not the owner, management, or other random employees. And 40% tip is “nice try.” If you threaten or scare away customers your place eventually closes and you and all of your team are out of work. So going for clicks? Have at it. Otherwise you’re not helping yourself or anyone else working in restaurants.
