The news is much more positive on the east side of the fire, however, as evacuation orders are expected to be rescinded for around 800 Summerland properties today.

These are some of the most extreme air-quality readings I have ever seen in the Okanagan. Tonight, multiple PurpleAir sensors near Fintry and Okanagan Lake are reporting 10-minute U.S. EPA PM2.5 AQI estimates between 879 and 1,090. It is absolutely horrendous outside my door. 💨
Bald Range showing heat on the north and south flanks and near the western ignition. At least 15,590 ha and still out of control. New start east of Okanagan Lake, light detections on Quilpituk fire. Heavy ground-level smoke region-wide. Next good satellite pass is ~10 hours out. #kelowna#penticton
Some Summerland updates:
- it sounds like the downtown core remains mostly, if not completely, intact (relayed to me by a friend who has a law firm there).
- it appears there was some loss of life in the more remote areas, although it remains unclear how many people perished.
Summerland Update: it's pretty bad. The town is evacuated. The Penticton folks are so generous its very heart warming. The water bombers finally arrived yesterday they are super busy right now. They are hitting perimeter neighborhoods to protect the town. Lots of homes are lost. No real numbers yet but I would guess likely 100 plus or so. It's a disaster the fire is far from under control. If the winds pick up it can get worse. The fire is already threatening the neighboring town of Peachland. Penticton is close as well. The rural folks affected are looking pasture and feed for their animals.
The BC Wildfire Service says it is one of the most challenging fires this province has ever faced, involving helicopter rescues of dozens of people trapped behind the fire line.

We spotted dozens of horse trailers on the highway last night. We are so appreciative of the care taken to save the animals impacted by the #SummerlandFire. 🧡
It wasn't just people who needed to get out safely from the fast-moving flames; groups worked together to get livestock and animals to safety
