Open-sourcing AI would democratize development and innovation, but it could cut into the profits of companies like OpenAI that rely on proprietary models. No surprise, they would resist it. I am looking forward to seeing how Google’s Gemma 3 open-souricng LLM performs.

I have a feeling he wants to ban deepseek.com not the local LLM. I'm sure that all you type in deepseek.com is captured and potentially looked at in China, just as OpenAI, Google, xAi etc. Imagine you're a US government worker and pass confidential information into DeepSeek, then potentially they'll have access to it. Or deepseek can give you biased responses, I mean look at the whole TikTok mess, under the national security. This should be very similar to that. On the other hand, is OpenAI, Google available in China, probably not.

No reason to ban the open source version at this point until anyone actually finds security vulnerabilities - although I am extremely leery of any random person installing locally...still it makes a good amount of sense not to use their interface as their privacy policies are terrible.
