Max is a bad person, but he also internally overestimates his bad-ness, in the sense that he views himself as cold, cruel, and unaffected by his actions when he really isn't. It creates a terrible self-fulfilling prophecy.

And this isn't to say that he's secretly, deep down good inside. He isn't. Max has done terrible things. He has hurt people in horrible, unforgivable ways. He is a complete scumbag. But he feeds this cycle of hurt, guilt, and more hurt to stifle it (& in ways, excuse himself)

IMO this take is too black & white. Tracing can be a great observational tool! OP was talking abt capturing likeness - qrt is a good drawing, but I wouldn't recognize it as Fernando w/o the ref next to it. Annotating & blocking over shapes/angles to then play w/ & exaggerate is -

helpful for tricky subjects & builds your ability to see those important shapes, angles, & proportions in faces from purely observation. Taking the time to trace over & make notes abt features is training yourself to immediately subconsciously recognize those things in the future

I don't need to do this regularly anymore but part of how I got there was forcing myself to take photos of various angles & expressions & tediously trace over & annotate features I noticed, & then playing w what I highlighted in different ways to draw a zillion caricatures
