The first excerpt from The AGI Chronicles is out in @TheAtlantic! It's the story of the central beef of the AI era: the feud between Dario Amodei and Sam Altman, who have hated each other for years. Amodei and six of his colleagues left OpenAI in 2020 to start Anthropic, but nobody knew exactly why. After a year of digging and more than 150 interviews, I figured it out. It involves Microsoft, Kanye West, a secret plan to sell AGI to Russia and China, and a Slack channel called BATNA. Most of all, it involves two people who didn't trust each other to build the most powerful technology either of them could imagine -- a mutual enmity that still fuels the AI race today. theatlantic.com/technology/2…

The Renoir Girls is an instant New York Times bestseller! Thrilled and so grateful to the brilliant team at S&S/Atria in the US and UK and to the descendants of those beautiful girls who told me their stories. @krisjdoyle, Peter Borland, @GeorginaCapel ♥️ @AtriaBooks

Another exciting week for The AGI Chronicles! Publishers Weekly and Kirkus, the two main publishing trades, both gave it starred reviews. And Ray Kurzweil, the legendary futurist whose books inspired Sam, Dario, Shane Legg, and others to work on AI, gave it a very kind blurb. Starting to think we may have cooked with this one!

For me, it was this paragraph. Heart-breaking. “When the President saw Musk’s post, he looked at it for several beats, an expression close to pensive crossing his face. ‘They always leave me,’ he finally said. ‘They always do this. This is why I can’t have friends.’”

Should you have 90 mins spare, I was on BBCR3 Private passions with the wonderful @MichaelBerkele2 chatting about the musical milestones through my life. Elgar to Spandau Ballet, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer to Chopin. Eclectic choices eh? Link next in next post.
