Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Kenya today for the groundbreaking of Dangote’s planned $16 billion Lamu refinery, a major energy project with a planned capacity of 700,000 barrels per day. The refinery is expected to serve petroleum markets across East Africa and begin operations by 2030.
For Ethiopia, the project carries significance beyond Kenya’s energy sector. Lamu forms part of the wider LAPSSET corridor, linking Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast with regional markets and strengthening a key trade and infrastructure route connecting Kenya with Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The development also comes shortly after Ethiopia announced a $660 million partnership with Djibouti and the Dangote Group to develop a refined petroleum pipeline from Damerjog in Djibouti to Dewele in Ethiopia, alongside major fuel storage facilities. The project is aimed at improving fuel supply, reducing logistics costs and strengthening the Ethiopia-Djibouti corridor.
Together, these developments highlight Ethiopia’s expanding energy and infrastructure cooperation with its neighbours. From Djibouti to Kenya’s Indian Ocean gateway, Ethiopia is becoming increasingly connected to a wider regional network that could strengthen trade, energy security and economic integration across East Africa.
