Judge Larson was given the 2018 District and Municipal Court Judges Association Presidents Award for his many years of work protecting judicial independence across our state. His work also helped inspire the formation of the DMCJA Council on Independent Courts. He knows the importance of an independent judiciary as an indispensable part of a free society. He believes with every fiber that the Supreme Court is supposed to be a backstop to unjust power, not an open gate to it. He is needed on our state's highest court to respond to a direct threat to your right to have cases heard by an independent judiciary. Governor Ferguson's abuse of the judicial appointment process is that direct threat. Judge Larson is the state's number one advocate for a better appointment and election process. Judge Larson's opponent was appointed by Governor Ferguson just a few months ago with no prior judicial experience. He worked at the same law firm with Governor Ferguson and has made political contributions to Governor Ferguson for 20 years, including $2,000 to the governor's 2028 gubernatorial campaign that has yet to be refunded. He had every right to make those political contributions, but not the right to sit in judgment on issues fueled by the very people he has supported with his own pocketbook for nearly 20 years. Although judicial candidates are not allowed to express opinions about future cases, we are completely free to comment on current or past decisions. Yesterday, the Washington Supreme Court, in a 6-3 vote overturned the will of the people by declaring I-2066, the natural gas initiative, unconstitutional. I would have joined the dissent. This is yet another example of the Supreme Court using a different standard for initiatives than they do for laws coming out of the legislature. I-2066 was the law of the land in Washington duly adopted by 1,971, 474 voters that was taken away by six people. It is important to note that five of the six justices in the majority were initially appointed by a governor, four of them were appointed by Governor Inslee. More important to note, the three dissenting judges were all elected by the people. We need to reform the current way we fill vacancies on our Supreme Court. Governor Ferguson has abused that power this year more than any past governor. In 2024, I wrote about the need for reform the appointment process and proposed a solution to increase the likelihood that judges will be accountable to the people of this state and not to the political elite. Today is Constitution Day, marking the signing of the United States Constitution 239 years ago on September 17, 1787. Just as significant to us here is our State Constitution, framed 137 years ago on August 22, 1889, 102 years after the U.S. Constitution. Both documents stand for the same principle; government of the people, by the people, and for the people. At the core of both documents is a requirement that elected officials focus on their duty and responsibility to us, and not power and control over us. The Oath of Office for a Justice of our Supreme Court reads: "I do solemnly swear or affirm, that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Washington, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office of judge of the supreme court of the State of Washington to the best of my ability." Mill Creek City Councilmember and Snohomish County Sheriff's deputy Vincent Cavaleri has put his endorsement behind Judge Dave Larson (Ret.) for State Supreme Court, Pos. 5. Twenty-five years. Two thousand nine hundred seventy-seven people went to work, boarded a plane, or reported for a shift that morning and did not come home. Firefighters and police officers climbed stairwells that everyone else was running down. A quarter century later, the people who were children then are raising children of their own who know that day only as history. Remembering is how it stays more than that. Today we remember them.

Judge Dave Larson (Ret.) was the second child of a blue-collar household in Tacoma. His dad, Joe, was a mechanic for Northwest Airlines. His mom, Donna, was a homemaker. That is the house Dave grew up in. The paycheck came from someone who worked with his hands, and the values that came with it were fairness, resilience, and treating people decently whether or not it was convenient. Dave worked multiple jobs to get through college, then worked full time and went to law school at night. His work ethic was inherited. He was invited by the chair of Everyday Activists to stand and talk with people waving protest signs at 205th and Aurora in Seattle. He was the guest of honor at a Sikh community event at the ShoWare Center. And this weekend he joined the Puyallup Tribe at their 47th Annual Tribal Labor Day Powwow — just to name a few. He was met with a universal response from the people who took the time to get to know him and what he stands for. They showed him the same respect and support as people on the other side of the political spectrum. Why?
