Tern started because I missed a customer email for 3 days. It was sitting in the inbox I check least. Custom domain, no app, no notifications. I didn't want another email app. I wanted one place that didn't care which provider the mail came from. Six weeks later that's a real product 🐦

From 61 to 80 in 4 weeks. @tern_mail didn’t rewrite the whole page. Three moves: Aug 25 - “Your email, all in one place.” A funding ask under the button. Trust 38. Score 61. Sep 2 - same headline. The ask became a customer quote. Trust 74. Score 76. Sep 23 - “All your email. Finally together.” Clarity 85. Score 80. That last line is the clearest thing on the page. Great job brother!! @ldo_dev

Building Tern has given me a ridiculous amount of respect for people who build email clients. I genuinely didn't understand why there weren't more good browser-based unified inboxes. But I think I get it now. Email is an absurd amount of data to store. Then you encrypt everything and watch that storage balloon. Then you realise storage is only half the problem, because people expect their inbox to feel instant, so you need infrastructure capable of consistently fast, sub-second read/write speeds. All of that is before you can even look at the UI. Syncing multiple providers, threading, drafts, sending, retries, attachments, search, spam, folders, weird imap servers and a never ending list of edge cases. I went into Tern thinking that the hard part would be building a nice inbox. BOY WAS I WRONG Today is one of those days where I'm calling it early and giving my brain a rest before it implodes. Checking five inboxes a day is a stupid way to work. Gmail for one product. Outlook for another. iCloud. Two custom domains for everything else. I wanted one place that didn't care which provider the mail came from. So I built Tern 🐦 One inbox. Every account. Every message labelled with where it came from.

Tern is getting seriously fast 🐦 Deleting mail is now near instant. The UI updates immediately, everything else happens in the background. You can speed-run your inbox without waiting for Tern to catch up. Plus, a completely new homepage hero just landed. 6 spots left 👀

Well, that database migration was worth the 15 minutes of downtime. Write latency: 77–106ms → ~1ms Disk usage: 100% → ~2–7% I/O wait: 20–53% → ~0.2–2% Tern is back online and the difference is ridiculous. Infrastructure side quest successfully completed 🫡

(vs a popular vector search engine provider) Paired vector benchmarks using the same client, data and query order across 30 samples: • Dense: 17.91 vs 49.71 ms • BM25: 18.00 vs 48.40 ms • Hybrid: 18.36 vs 47.92 ms That’s 2.61–2.78× lower end-to-end latency.

I love this idea. An FAQ where you can just ask is such good UX. Very tempted to build this for Tern. Slightly less tempted to see the AI bill after people discover they can ask it anything 😂
