On this day in 1941, St. Maximilian Kolbe, a great Catholic priest, died in Auschwitz.
When a husband and father was selected to be placed in a starvation chamber and cried out for his family, St. Maximilian volunteered to take his place.
Once inside the starvation chamber, he led the condemned men in prayer and singing, surviving for more than two weeks without food or water.
Today, we celebrate his feast as a triumph over death and evil.
