Happy Independence to Nigeria: An Un-Independent and Undemocratic Nation.
Nigeria at 66: Un-Independent, Undemocratic, and Unfree."
Independence and Democracy are the twin pillars of self-determination. While independence establishes who holds the authority to govern a territory (sovereignty from external rule), democracy determines how that authority is exercised internally (power belonging to the people).
Core Pillars of True Democracy
Popular Sovereignty & Representation: Citizens exercise control through periodic, free, fair, and multi-party elections based on universal suffrage.
Rule of Law & Constitutional Limits: No individual, king, or president is above the law. The legal system applies equally to all citizens.
Protection of Fundamental Rights: True democracy goes beyond mere majority rule; it requires a constitutional guarantee of individual rights—such as freedom of speech, press, belief, and assembly—and protection against the tyranny of the majority.
The principles above represent the true benefits guaranteed to citizens of an independent and democratic country, which is why so many nations fight for them. Yet, in our country, the opposite is true. At 66 years old, if Nigeria were human parents, they would have failed miserably—and when parents fail, their children cannot be proud of them.
When we, as Nigerian youth, look at what other nations have accomplished for their citizens as parents—their advancements in technology, power, the economy, healthcare, and education and more—we feel ashamed of our own country's leadership.
My dearest fellow Nigerian youths, it is high time we fight for our true independence. It is painfully obvious that we are still living under a different form of colonial rule—one imposed by our fathers and grandfathers who have failed us as leaders. Let us not fail our own children. Let us support leaders like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to build a "New Nigeria," after which the youth can take the mantle of leadership. Enough is enough.
