This article reminded me of a strange moment I had a couple of months ago.
I was reviewing a PR from a junior developer and when I asked him, "Who wrote this?" - in the tone of, "What the hell is this?"
He didn't know, so we did a git blame and to my surprise, it was me.
In 25 years of coding, for the most part I've always known the code I've written. But I had no memory of writing this. That was such a strange feeling.
And that was my wake-up call.
Yes, coding is becoming commoditized. But we still need to understand what we're shipping.
We can delegate the implementation. We can't delegate the ownership.

One of the books that had a strong influence on me, and that I truly felt made me a better developer, was Refactoring by Martin Fowler.
That knowledge has also been very helpful with agentic coding. Extract method, for example, taught me to create more modular and encapsulated designs.
To the builders out there: highly recommended. Read it, practice it.

My recommendation to junior engineers in the agentic coding era: learn Rust.
The compiler gives your agent constant feedback. Refactors are safer. The tooling is excellent. Strong types catch a lot before runtime.
Rust isn't always the easiest language to write, but it's a great language to let agents work in.
