The Boy George concert on a monsoon night in California.
Few music events leave you feeling that the artist isn’t “performing”, he’s authentic, having as great a time as the audience. BG and Culture Club want you to enjoy yourself, because they clearly are.
Boy George sings but also tells stories. From quips about attempts to cancel him, to shitty friends, internet nobodies he argues with, or sweet remembrances of his mum and Top of the Pops, Boy George seems forever bemused about life and its absurdities.
The set, backed by fabulous graphics (who designed that!), included his hits with a few new twists, where he warned, “You’ll get over it!” as well as a “Let’s Dance” homage to David Bowie, and a nod to TRex.
Everyone did dance. Israelis waved flags, a beach ball ping ponged through the crowd, the crowd sang loudly, leaving happier for having been there.
