In loving memory of our great friend, supporter and the author of our name “Ukraine Connect”, @Andries Hofstra💔💔💔 He knew a lot about Independence: in 2024 he left his mark on our office flag in Frisian: “Leaver dea as slaef”, which means “Better dead than a slave”. This inscription is from the monument of the Battle of Warns in Friesland on 26 September 1345, located in Stavoren, Warns, West Frisia (Friesland). The battle resulted in victory for the Frisians and ensured that West Frisia was not under Hollandic subjugation. Ukrainians have embraced this philosophy throughout their history, which remains very relevant to us today. We would rather die than become slaves to occupiers and terrorists. Thank you @justadutchguy for everything you did for Ukraine 💙💛🙏🏻 We still can’t completely believe and can’t stop crying 😭 You are the best! And will remain forever in our hearts ❤️💙💛

My beloved country!❤️💙💛 The country whose life I would never trade for life in any other country. A country whose independence was won in battle, and whose price is measured in millions of lives, blood and hard work. A country where, for every day of your life, someone has already paid the price on the front line. A unique country. There is no other like it. This is my home. And I have no other home either. Ukraine, we are the same age. For 35 years now, we have been growing and changing together. You know literally everything about me. We understand each other without words. We have a special bond that will last forever. I will always love you, I will always believe in you. You never grow tiresome, and you never wear me out. Every single day, I consciously choose you. A load of Dutch fellas turned out for our beloved Andries @Justadutchguy and his love @lotta_love43 today. 🇨🇭 and 🇩🇪 fellas tuned up at short notice too along with 🇺🇦 soldiers. The 🇳🇱 were stereotypically efficient and arranged some stickers and cars to donate to the 🇺🇦 Army is in honour within 24 hours🙏. 💔

Friends, do you know anyone who will be traveling from the Netherlands to Ukraine tomorrow (Saturday) or Sunday (private car, volunteer convoy, anything)? I have a very good friend of Andries @Justadutchguy who lives in Assen and is willing to travel all the way from Assen to Kyiv to be here for his farewell. This friend was a big part of his everyday life🙏🏻 😭😭😭 I still don’t want to believe it. There is no other person in this world like Andries. Such a beautiful mind, such a kind, noble, funny, unique person🙏🏻💔 With so many things still to be accomplished. With so many bright days still to be lived. I knew life was very cruel and unfair, and that death takes away the best people. But I was not ready for the day when our angel Andries would be taken from us… My sincere condolences to everyone who knew Andries or had an honour to meet him in person. It’s an enormous, irreparable loss for all of us, Ukraine and the World 😔

He was light. He was goodness. He was the sort of man who showed up, who helped, who drove across borders to support others, who made people feel seen and valued. If you knew him, you know how rare he was. Please keep him and his family close in your hearts.

My world has shattered. The man I loved, my beautiful, kind @Justadutchguy died suddenly in front of me as we travelled to Ukraine. There was no warning, no pain, just a second that changed everything.
