the world has aped out over ai in the last few weeks in a new way. the technology must activate some latent form of psychosis in us. the thought or sight of it is too intense. it makes people lose their minds.

it’s okay for achilles to stop dragging hector’s body now. fwiw i never believed the stochastic parrot view. scaling laws, cot turing completeness, unverifiable from the verifiables, benchmark saturation, whatever else, all of these arguments lack the inductive strength to force the conclusion onto most people. couple this with models that were historically much less capable, and it makes sense that people simply wouldn’t accede to these dogmata, which were held principally by people with an obvious conflict of interest, however sincerely they tried to communicate. the strongest argument the industry can make still seems to come in the form of the continuous improvement of the models for users in a way that users feel and in producing enough scientific or intellectual achievements that they can no longer be denied.
