This Jeffrey pine cone looks like a welcoming beginning to the fall season, but it had a bit of a surprise for us inside. We CT scanned it and found coneworms, the larvae of a moth in the Dioryctria genus that shelter inside and eat the seeds. The open cone had 3 of them. A fresher, closed one had 22. 😳 Have you heard about these?

These Jeffrey pine cones had a bit of a surprise waiting inside. Both were infested with coneworms, the larvae of moths in the genus Dioryctria that lay their eggs inside the cone. When the eggs hatch, the larvae eat the pine seeds from the inside out. One cone had three worms. The other had fourteen. 😱 Are you looking at pine cones the same way after this?

We thought we'd bought a BYD Blade battery online, but it wasn't quite right. The prismatic cell that we got shares the same chemistry, LFP. We CT scanned it on our new Neptune Performance to see what the similarities are. Have you come across an LFP battery before?

We're in @wirecutter this week! Talenti gelato jars are notorious for being difficult to open. Wirecutter approached us to see what our CT scans could reveal, so we compared the jars against other screw-top jars from the grocery store. The thread turned out to be much sharper than the threads on other plastic containers, which lets it claw into the lid as the freezing gelato expands and makes the cap tighter.
